Do you go beyond the Points?

It has not taken me long to earn a respectable number of points here on Active Rain. I noticed from the beginning that those with the most points are featured everywhere and when someone is seeking a professional (especially on Localism) that the people near the top have the best shot at getting a call. So I set out to move up in ranks quickly.

I have learned that you can only post 10 blogs a week for the automatic 200 points, that you can comment on posts 10 times a day for 25 points each. So just by doing this 5 days a week, one can add 3250 points per week! Easy enough. But what do you do AFTER you posted for points?

The more I am involved in Active Rain the more I want to post, not just for points. To me I see AR as a means by which to spread good news about our business, help others in my field achieve their dreams and, of course, help further my own name along the way. BUt I don't stop contributing after earning the max points....

So do you blog just for points, or after gaining the max points you can do you continue to contribute to the group?

I'd love to hear your take on this...

I post for the Google Juice, the consumer and lastly for fellow Rainers.  If the point system was taken away today I'd be fine with it.  I would still post for the Google juice, the consumer and lastly for fellow Rainers.

The quality of what we post should be more important than the posts.  If a prospective customer finds Active Rain and all they find posted isn't either very deep or worthwhile they aren't going to pick up the phone and call.  Unfortunately it doesn't take long to go through an area and see who is posting just for the points.

Gail- I love the interactions too! Its a great way to meet people you normally wouldn't get to.

Kris- Love that Google Juice! I'd still post too without the points.

Matthew- I was sort of joking. I love what AR can be and what it has already done for me, but I am not gonna stop posting, so points (as long as they are there to earn) will keep coming!

Kay- me too. The information can be amazing.

Cindy- You are right. There must be some quality to the posts. My first few posts can seem a bit shallow, then I got too deep. I am learning that what I post here and to Localism needs to be informative, funa nd uplifting. There is enough negative out there and neither professionals or the general public need to hear more of it from us.

Thank you all for your comments... I'd love to hear more insights.

Ed - As you know - I've learned MUCH from my brief interaction with ActiveRain.  It's definately not about points for me (yet) it's about support and knowledge!  THANK YOU for helping my career grow!

Spend enough time here and points will add up... I don't think I have ever hit 10 posts within one week but there are days when my comments will go well beyond the max.   Points are an incentive to hang around and contribute but anyone with their primary focus on the numbers is missing the point!

Eleanor... THANK YOU!

Dan- I agree. Although I love the points idea and will continue to accumulate them as I go, I want to contribute to the group. I also love Localism and want to add there as much as possible. I find myself writing half of my posts for Localism alone and that excites me!

Hi Ed, as you and others pointed out, Blogging should definitely be about more than points.  Sure, points are important, but only to a certain extent.  For me, that "certain extent" is being listed as a "Featured Agent" within the Agent Directory for my city and that happened a long time ago.  I LOVE the interaction here and I appreciate SO MUCH the wealth of information that's shared here, but I don't blog primarily for AR Members.  Of course, blogging experts are able to blog in such a way that even their Agent training blogs are written in such a way that there's consumer benefit as well. I share Agent relevant info when I have something to share, but I blog primarily for Consumers, so the majority of my posts are to Localism.  I've also found that, in posting QUALITY content, I learn a lot along the way.  Even something so simple as posting Market Reports for my area is very educational for me because, in gathering the data from the MLS, I learn lots.  Beyond MLS Reports, there's so much about our local area that we can share with consumers and R.E. Transaction knowledge that we can share with them.  When focused properly on giving Consumers quality, useful information, it benefits us as we begin to be considered as quality, expert Agents and it's funny how we learn during that process.  As others mentioned, "Google Juice" is great because it keeps on giving long after we've surpassed our point max for the day or for the week.

Hi Ed,

What points?  Seriously points do mean different things to different people....I personally do not care about points (only 28k in over a year on AR) This is a great place for networking, learning, and  really think this is the best place to have all real estate related articles and subjects in one easy to understand place.

Ed,

If I blogged for points, I would have reached the top by now, given the amount of time I spend on this site! Yet I have been here since July/06 and still have not reached 100000! Others start blogging and reach the pinnacle, then seem to fade away. I try to help the community with my newbie and rookie and reo groups, and I guess that's it. The google juice is icing on the cake and the friendships I have made, priceless!

Thank you Karen. I amnot sure how long it will take me to reach 100,000 points, but right now that's not a focus. Obviously I want to be among the top in my area and have achieved that already. I will continue to blog (points or no points) so that my name and reputation continue to stay among the top.

The points are a nice bonus to blogging, but I am addicted to AR for the interaction, learning, sharing... I have made some really good friends here. Points or no points, that alone is worth my time.
