Change the Batteries in the Thermostat

Mental note to self, change the batteries in the thermostat each Fall when you change the smoke detector batteries.

Amherst NH real estate officeI arrived in our Amherst NH real estate office this morning and brrrr its cold in here.  Checked out the thermostat and its blank.

Oh dear, I don't think I've ever checked the batteries in the thermostat.

And of course it happened on the weekend when agents are in and out and it went un-noticed.  It was 45 degrees in here this morning.

So I changed them and the furnace kicked right on.  This is a steam system with radiators and they have just started their freight frain sounds of clacking and hissing.  I will always think of growing up and wet mittens on the top of the radiators (we used to have a plan on top of the radiators).  Its a good memory.

By the time our Amherst NH real estate agents start to arrive it will be toasty again in Amherst.

Last year, during a building inspection on a property I had listed, it was discovered that the HVAC unit wasn't coming on.  My client was an out of area Seller, so I told him that, before calling in a repair person, I'd go take a look.  Sure enough, it was the battery in the thermostat!  And shame on that building inspector for not catching that (or maybe he just doesn't carry spare batteries with him....)

Batteries! We take them so for granted until they need to be changed! Such a simple thing and yet most people do not put this on a regular schedule! We were without our tv channel changer for a week because the batteries ran out and we did not have an opportunity to get to a store to buy more. Now I keep a supply at home for such times.

Good morning Rene, That is fantastic advice and some that people often do not think about. You are lucky it is not that cold so things did not freeze over night. Hopfully you warmer up nicely by now. Have a great Monday

Hi Rene,  I didn't know that thermostats have batteries.  Good to know since we have had such extreme weather here in Colorado lately.
