Duck, Take Cover and Hold! Earthquake Awareness Week in Tennessee

By

earthquake awarenessThis week is Tennessee's annual Earthquake Awareness Week. If you start to feel that shaky feeling, Duck , Take Cover, and Hold!

Seriously though, while Tennessee is not necessarily known for being the epicenter for many earthquakes, we do have some from time to time, around the state. In fact, Reelfoot Lake was created by the earthquake of 1811-1812. That particular quake is considered to be one of the most significant earthquake events in the US.

There are also a number of Earthquake myths, one of those being that animals can sense earthquake activity and will disappear from their homes. This dates back to Greece in 373 BC. There is a lot of anecdotal stories of animals behaving strangely before an earthquake, but no scientific evidence has proven this to be true.

If there is an Earthquake Warning, or you start feeling that feeling, where the building is shaking, and loose objects are falling off the shelves, you want to get yourself under a sturdy piece of furniture and hold on until the shaking stops. Duck, Take Cover and Hold!

Chiara ~ That's cool that there is an awareness week out there. Having experienced Typhoons, Nor'easterns, Tornado's, Blizzards and Earthquakes, I would have to say that Earthquakes are the one thing you really can't predict. With the exception of Tornado's, everything else can give us time to prepare, to a degree. The 7.1 Loma Prieta Earthquake in October of '89 was actually one of the reasons I moved to Colorado. We lived on the San Andreas Fault out there. Duck, Take cover and Hold, truly is a very good practice. Keep shakin' things up out there. ;)

Barbara, I have had a tornado touch down within a mile of my house. Luckily, (knock on wood) I've not had a tornado come through my neighborhood. I also lived, very briefly, in Lower Alabama (LA) along the eastern shores of Mobile Bay, during the summer and lived through a hurricane (thankfully not a large one!). So far, I've been pretty lucky avoiding the truly destructive storms.

Fernando, I'm not sure I'd want to run outside first!

Jon, in all honesty, I only learned of the Earthquake awareness this morning, so, yes, I think it's pretty cool too.

Memphis is next to the fault line, a target of the New Madrid. On December 16, 1811, at (2:15 a.m.) the future location of Memphis was shaken at Mercalli level nine intensity.
