Many realtors are having a hard time in areas that have been severly affected by the mortgage companies tightening loan requirements and the sub-prime defaults and foreclosures.  But many are thriving in this time where bargains are the name of the game.  What separates out these realtors?  Why are they thriving when others are drowning?  It is very simple, actually.  The following things are what the thriving realtors are doing over the ones that are drowning or barely keeping their heads above water.

1.  Work smarter not harder.  Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is insanity, as Einstein once said.  The same can be said about real estate.  Doing the same routine in this market and hoping for the phone to ring is not going to be effective.

2.  Distance yourself from you competitors:  Do you do something different than others?  Do you specialize in something? Find something that makes you unique.

3.  Know how to get results from REO's and Short-sales.  Getting results is the name of the game.  Knowing how to expedite REO responses will help make sales.

4. Have Fun.  Many people are stressing out about market conditions and not having sold a house for a few months.  Remember why you got into real estate.  Your customer service skills will relate if you enjoy doing your job or if you are stressed out.  Remember treating the customer well is all that matters.

I'm calling past clients and present customers to wish them a wonderful holiday weekend, and invite them to drop by my office for hot cider or tea if they are out and about this Sat. as that's my day to prepare my office for the holidays. I'll put the focus on relieving their stress and try to forget about mine!

Great idea.  If I was in charge of an office, I would have a winter party for my past and present clients.

#1 is my motto...#2 is good also, be aware of what competitors are doing but don't get preoccupied by them.  Yes, even if it is slowing down it is still a great career and the fun never stops.  Have a great Thanksgiving.

Matthew - Excellent post. I love the Einstein quote. If you're not working differently in this market, you're dead.

My sentiment exactly Murrieta.  You can't survive if you do the same thing over and over and not being efficient at what you are doing.
