Cobalt Blue GlassYes, it’s time for Christmas shopping, and I’m sure you have people on your list that just make you wonder what the heck you can get for them.

If you live around here, let me give you a big hint: Blenko.

If you think it might be a good idea to give something beautiful, you want Blenko.

If you want to give something that is one of a kind, it’s got to be Blenko.

If you want something distinctly West Virginian, crafted with pride, think Blenko.

I could go on all day.  I love the gorgeous colors and there is just nothing like sunlight pouring through their glass.

Blenko has some special events planned for this Friday, November 23rd.

  • They are introducing a new color, Pink Ice, that will be produced in a limited number of special styles.  (Be the first to one this Friday!)

  • Also, Richard Blenko will be signing all purchases from 9:00- 12:00 and from 1:00 to 2:00.  Sheet glass blowing demonstrations will be available for viewing from 8:00 to 3:00.
  • Also look for their special selection of Marshall and WVU products.

We are lucky to live so close to such a treasure.

My last trip to Blenko went something like this.  My little girl needed a break from school and I let her play hooky and took her to Blenko.  (She’s a great student and this was a one-off, it’s OK.)  She was fascinated watching the artisans each take turn with their part in the process of blowing glass.  They passed the red hot blob one to another, each doing their part.  She was amazed to see glass so hot you could cut it with scissors.  When they finished the piece, I looked down to see the big smile and look of wonder on her face.  One of the artisans caught my eye, and I smiled and mouthed, “Thank you.”  He smiled and nodded.  I hope the awe visible on my Little One’s face made his day nearly as much as it did mine.

Take home a piece of handmade West Virginia for yourself or as a gift.  There’s really nothing like it.

Blenko is located in Milton at 9 Fairground Road.

My husband used to work for a stained glass maker and got seriously into glass.  Consequently, we have a couple of pieces of Blenko glass, much treasured - a large dark green lidded pot and a lovely small red/yellow swirly vase.  We've had them for a couple of decades now; they're much treasured.

I'd forgotten they were originally from your neck of the woods!

Our PBS station here in Ft. Worth plays a segment on Blenko glassworks every time they have a pledge drive. They always bring Richard Blenko in to autograph things to raise funds. It's beautiful glassware.

I'm going to have to check mapquest to see how far Milton is from Ripley, WV.  I am heading up that way for Thanksgiving and would love to check Blenko out!

Sarah, we've got a rectangular shaped Blenko vase with a round flared throat that is a show-stopper, especially on July 4th (our anniversary) with red and white carnations and some ribbon.

oooooh Sarah, I recognized the colors from a previous picture you posted.  Beautiful.  I was right there along with you watching Little One as well.  You're so sweet not minding when I tag along!

Love that color!   It reminds me of artisans we have here at Henry Ford Village that work their craft while we all watch and oogle.   Little One is blessed to have a Mom that knows when a "personal" day is needed.

Tom - I'm Sarah, but yes, Blenko is a store.  :o)  It's also the plant where they still blow glass by hand ... well, through long tubes because that stuff is HOT, but you know what I mean.

Matt - They make beautiful things -- and they ship!!  You know, just in case you might want anything.

Kris - All their colors are beautiful, but that is my favorite.  I have several pieces in cobalt.  At the time we went there, Little One had just started school and then weeks later moved to a new class when her grade got too full.  I was glad for the move (she was in a split class with younger kids, and I thought she'd get bored) but it was stressful for her.  She does NOT like change.

Sean - I shipped something very small from Blenko to Hawaii not to long ago, and was surprised that it was just like shipping anywhere else in the US.  They don't charge any more for us to get stuff to you guys, because you're still America.  That's what my buddy at the post office told me anyway.  :o)

Maggie - I would be thrilled to take you there for real!  Any time, girl!!

Mike - I see Blenko stuff everywhere, so I'm not surprised.  I love seeing their pieces in the sets of TV shows.

Patricia - It's my favorite!  Such a deep color, but when the sunlight hits it, it just GLOWS.  Love it!

Judy - It's worth a trip!  They have a small museum above the shop where they show off some of their treasures.  Did you know they make the country music awards?

Chris - Yep!  And affordable, especially from their shop.  (A little more online or if you find them "out" somewhere.  But locals can get bargains.)

Amy - I'm afraid to guess for you, but we used to play Ripley in football in high school, so it can't be that far.  (Bring your camera!!)

Linda - Really?  That is so cool!  :o)!!

Marc - I am lucky to live so close.  I really should go more often, too.  Might have to do a little Christmas shopping there this year!

Tricia - Very cool!  Just describing the colors puts the pictures in my head.  I love their red and yellow but I don't have any in that color.  Maybe that needs to be my next gift to myself.  :o)!

Now you've done it!  I already am addicted to collecting North Carolina pottery and now I want to start collecting Blenko!  It's simply beautiful.  There is nothing more wonderful to me than hand crafted and unique locally art.  Each region has such interesting arts!  Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family Sarah!

Oooh, I'd like to go there.  It seems like there is a resurgence of glass blowers these days, which is a great way to recycle glass.

Blenko Decanter 715

Sarah,

I LOVE Blenko!!!!

My collection consists of pieces mostly from the 50-70's, decanters are my favorite pieces!!! I've actually purchased pieces from the 50's through the early 70's for my mother, sister, and mother in law for Christmas. My mother and sister rave about my collection when they come over. My husband isn't certain if that many Blenko pieces are supposed to all go on one credenza (LOL!), and I also have a few striking large Blenko lamps. Basically, I love mid century modern decor, and I especially love Blenko.

=)

Sara - I love it!!  What a great shape, and I love the little circles all over it!  My Mom has a tall, skinny decanter in that color.  It used to have a long, flame-shaped stopper but it broke.  (I hope I had nothing to do with it.)  She bought a replacement stopper similar to that one for it.  All my Blenko is new, so far all in shades of blue and green.  I want to add some red or orange -- I'm loving the orange!  I need to add some pictures of the new pink ice -- I drove over there this weekend just to peek at it.  If you're ever over this way, I'd love to take you to Blenko!!

Georgina - I like that about it, too.  They have huge piles of broken glass, sorted by color, waiting to become beautiful again.  (Even the broken piles are beautiful!)

Lucky - They were accepting orders over the weekend, I don't know if you could try calling them ... 1-877-4BLENKO.  Try it!!   (We should have talked earlier, I was just there!!  Sorry!)

Diane - I love this glass.  I love the rich colors and the way it glows in the light.  I'm a big fan of things made by actual people, too.  I'm crafty.  :o)

Tom - In this area, we have a lot of glass artists.  You should see my paperweight from Hamon Glass.  It sits on a lighted base (from Blenko) and it's GORGEOUS.

Sarah,

I just tried calling them and got an answering machine.  (But it is 4:16am)  It said their hours are 8am-5pm Monday - Friday so I'll call back in a few hours.

Thanks for the info!

Hope your Thanksgiving was great!

My Dad used to work in one of the glass plants in the Milton area when he was young.

It was great when I would be in front of the TV and people would say "  Your Daddy wasn't a glass maker "

I'de be like LIAR!  Ha!~

Sarah,

I ordered the pink vase for Laura.

It just arrived at the house........EARLY!

They told me that they weren't sure it would make it by Christmas.

Yippee!
