Preparing in advance for the winter season, will help cut expenses, save energy and protect your home.Here are a few simple steps you can take to be prepared for the chilly season:

• Check your smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. An open flame in your fire place, lit candles and lighted holiday decorations are fire hazards. 
• By preventing air intrusion into your home, you can help cut down on energy costs. Check your windows, doors, basement and attic. Seal cracks with caulking or weather stripping and, if needed, add extra insulation.
• Turn off water to outside faucets and drain any remaining water to keep it from freezing. Wrap insulation around exposed pipes in basements or garages.
• Trim trees and large shrubs. Cold, windy weather can cause branches to break, resulting in possible property damage, or personal injury.
• Inspect heating units and chimneys. Make sure the heating systems are serviced and have clean filters for optimal performance.
• Inspect your roof for missing shingles, cracks and moss build-up. If your roof is in need of repair, contact a roofing contractor to fix trouble spots.
• Clean roof gutters from debris and leaves and make sure the downspouts direct the rain, or melt water away from the home's foundation.
• Keep a snow shovel, sand and deicing salt on hand to prevent falls and injuries in case of snow and ice.
