My Inspirational Song of the Day(Rawk Awn)!

Like many of you, I was born in the seventies and my teen years were spent in the 80's. My parents allowed me to stay home from school to cram for the 6th grade spelling bee on that historic day in 1981 when MTV aired for the first time. Needless to say, I didn't get much studying done as I spent hours happily watching video after video in complete awe.(In case you were wondering, I still won the spelling bee!)

One band that quickly made the transition to MTV was Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. (Yep, you guessed it, hardcore rocker here). During that era, the band featured as vocalist a fluffy-haired hottie named Joe Lynn Turner.(He came after Ronnie James Dio and some other guy who made Rainbow sound like a KISS cover band). Used to clip out his picture from magazines and scotch-tape them to my Pea-chee folders...

So I was in the car yesterday listening to my "Best of Rainbow" CD, and this song called "Power" came on. I mean, I've heard it 100 times or more, but this time I really paid attention to the lyrics for some reason and felt for a moment that they were written just for me.
The reality, though, is that it was written for all of us. Simple, yet inspiring. Yes, many of us are facing tough times right now, but we have the power and the drive within ourselves to overcome any hardship, financial or otherwise, that comes our way, and it's just as strong as we want it to be.

So read this and hang in there, because YOU GOT THE POWER!
Power

Everybody's sayin' that the
times are getting rough
You gotta stay loose baby and
you gotta be tough...oh
I get knocked down...get right back up again
Cause I never give up and I never give in...
Oh - so strong
Got the power when I turn it on
Yeah - I'm gonna get my fill
Nothin's gonna stop me now
and nothin' ever will
I got the...power
I got the power
I feel the power...
and don't forget it
Make some, break some ain't no big surprise
They're gonna wheel ya, deal
ya, tell ya all the
lies...(realize)
But I'm a hot shot, shoot em down
let me be (that's me)
Cause I got nothin' for nothin' and
nothin's ever free...no
Oh - so strong
All I gotta do is turn it on
Yeah - I'm gonna get my fill
Nothin's gonna stop me now
and nothin' ever will
I got the power
Oh, I got the power
I can feel the power
I got the power
Yeah yeah yeah...turn it on
I can take anything that gets in my way
I don't worry 'bout tomorrow I
just live for today...
Oh - so strong
Got that feeling when I turn it on
Yeah - I'm gonna get my fill
Nothin's gonna stop me now
and nothin' ever will
I got the power
I can feel the power
power
I can feel the power...
Turn it on...

Ah the memories. Now - if you had only been listening to it on an 8-Track. They don't make them like that anymore.

Yes, this brings back a lot of memories, especially the glowing eyes...It's been at least 15 years since I watched MTV.

Kevin, Joeann, Ken - Thank you for your comments.  I hope you and your families have a fantastic Thanksgiving!

Hi Lisa...nice post...it is amazing how many times we can listen to a song or band and then all at once it clicks.  Thanks for stirring memories Lisa.

LISA:  I'm sorry that I didn't comment on this sooner.  I've been getting caught up and I missed this when it came out.  I have featured it in Inspired By Song!  Rainbow is one of my all-time favorite bands.  I still remember hearing them for the first time in the early 80's at sleepaway camp.  My friend Doug had all of their tapes (now I feel old).  I listened to them, and I was instantly hooked!  As soon as I got home, I went and bought every album leading up to Difficult To Cure.  I still remember seeing their video for "Can't Happen Here."  I have purchased every album since.  Rainbow and Queensryche are my two favorite bands to this day.  By the way, the singer on Down To Earth was Graham Bonnett.  He was only in Rainbow for that album and then he went on to front Alcatrazz, and another band called Impelliteri.  Thanks for bringing up some great memories, and for putting in a truly inspiring song for those that don't know it.  You rawk!!!!

Adam- we must be about the same age!:) To this day I still find myself replacing my old tapes with CD's, which is ridiculous now that everyone is just downloading them onto the computer now anyways.

Thanks for the Inspired by Song feature - cool!  And thanks for reminding me about Graham Bonnett, I was trying to remember who that guy was and it was driving me crazy.
