I just got a new Palm® CentroTM smartphone and I love it! More on that later....

Supra has approved it as a lockbox key! Yippee! That was fast! They ususally take 3-4 months to approve new devices. But when I talked to them at the NAR Convention, they said it was a go! So, I came home and bought one.

I went to the association office to get it set up and the young man behind the counter is half way through the process when he hands it back and says you need to answer one of these three secret questions.

The display says:

 1. Who was your first employer?
2. What was your first pet's name?

3. What was your school mascot?

I stared. I tried to scroll down for different questions....I stared some more..

I finally said,"I don't know the answer to any of these!" He said,"Make something up."

So I choose pet's name, remembering I had a parakeet and wrote BIRD

The screen said,"Must contain 5 letters" Whew, this is getting difficult..but I fixed it. Now, I will never rememeber it, but I really wanted this to be my lockbox key!

I was feeling pretty inept, when it finally hit me......The programmers were Gen Y that were not that far removed from those questions. Fo me, we were talking over 40 years ago!!!!!And they want me to remember WHAT???? I went to an all girl's school and we had no freakin' MASCOT!!!!

Some days I realize there IS a generation gap!!!!!

Joeann, did you hear that Supra is adding a safety feature for our lock boxes ? A call for help and an emergency code. Pretty cool, huh?

Joeann, I have felt the same way before. Sometimes the questions are not good for me. Of course, when they ask for "city of birth" I always wonder if I should capitalize it or not.

I try to keep up with the times, but they are always one step ahead of me.  I wouldn't know the answers to any of those questions either.   I love the added safety feature that Missy is talking about.  That would be great.

Joeann,

I can relate! But look at the bright side, you are doing things your grandparents and parents would not have thought of. You can use GenX? for a code:)

When I started in realty, just 5 years ago, I'd never HELD a cell phone, didn't know how to turn one on/off nor that you couldn't always get cell reception!!  In fact, the day after I signed on with my broker was when I went to the cell phone store to purchase a phone.  My husband told me where to go.  Now, I have the phone, new laptop with Vista, my supra key (looking forward to the new one with the safety features), etc.  I feel hip but know that there are lots of other new "toys" out there that I haven't a clue about!

By the way,  I don't know the answers to those questions either.

Hi, Joeanne,

First, I want to say that I've been receiving your blog for a couple of years by email... before I even found AR.  So nice to find that this is where you write your posts!  Always greatly informative, interesting, and fun.

Secondly, it couldn't be "over 40 years" because you don't even look 40 in your photo... or do you have the same magic photographer that I use?? (big smile)  Mine is a master with Photo Shop!

Third, Please write a post about the new smartphone... I'm sure others would like to know more, as do I.

Thanks for all your great advice, articles, and for making a difference in our industry.

Joeann, Happy Thanksgiving and the new smart phone looks great... I think Im too technically challenged to use one though.  :)  I knew I was old when I looked in the mirror and saw my mother looking back at me.  :))
