SEO and Your Images

Cartoon Cat pointing at Computer ScreenHave you stopped and considered SEO and Your Images?

One of the most important things about writing for the web is to remember to write for the viewer and not just for the search engine.  It is critical to have a visually appealing site or your viewer will leave and probably never return. If you only use text, your page is not going to be very interesting so you should add pictures and/or images.

But search engines are not able to interpret your images. In a sense the search engine is just like a non-visual human browsing the web.

You may have heard of the term "Alt" used to give accessibility to the visually impaired.  It stands for alternative and is text used to describe the image.  If you do a good job describing the image you will allow the search engine to understand the image and it will increase the value of the page.

Some basic things to remember when you write your "alt tags" are:

  • Keep it simple,
  • Keep details relevant to the image and to the page,
  • Don't make it too long,
  • Don't forget to write for both the viewer and the search engine,
  • Don't try to fool the search engine by loading with keywords.

If you remember to take care in selecting, naming and describing your images you will have a much better site.  Both the viewers and the search engines will appreciate your efforts.

Gary--I must do a pretty good job naming my images because I tend to get quite a few hits that come through on image searches. Good reminder for any newbies out there though. :)

I'm guilty of writing my atl tags for Mr Google and not Mr Consumer.  :-)  I'm working on changing many on my site.

When I get around to blogging more about my own listings, this sort of thing will come in handy.  Most of my posts using generic photos.  For listings and localism posts, using the tags will be essential.

I want to SELL your home, not LIST it!

It's also useful to include the keywords in the image title and to name the image with your keyword phrase.

Gary,

This Alt thing is new to me. I'm just starting to use keywords in our photos. Do you have an example of how you name your images?

Thanks,

Kim

It looks like I am really behind.  I will get back to this and will answer everyone later tonight provided the snow here at my Mom's here in Wyoming doesn't block my satellite Internet access.  If that happens I will be in Salt Lake City tomorrow and I'll answer from there. Thank you everyone for your comments.
