This morning I decided to eat a banana for breakfast and it lead me to create this blog.  Funny what gives us inspiration.  I began thinking what percentage of the bananas people buy and take home get too ripe and are thrown away before eating?  In our house, we probably eat less than half of what we buy. We just forget to eat them.

My favorite way to eat a banana is to make a peanut butter and banana sandwich.  Is that a Texas thing or do others in the country eat that combination? I'm curious....so let's have a survey....comments please!

According to Wikipedia, bananas are a fruit that come in different sizes and colors - yellow, purple, and red. The three top countries who produce the most bananas are:  India, Brazil, and China....I thought they all came from Panama.  Guess I was wrong.  There are many different recipes that use bananas.  To find out more about bananas, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana.

So now....time for the SURVEY:

  • What percentage of bananas you buy are eaten?
  • Do you eat peanut butter and banana sandwiches?
  • What is your favorite recipe for bananas?

No banana goes to waste in my home. The very ripe ones make great banana bread.

Waste no banana!  From smoothies to banana bread they are all used.  Hint:  Freeze the ripe ones until you have time to make the banana bread--still tastes wonderful.

We generally eat all of them, but there are occasionally one or two that get too nasty for anyone to eat.  We don't have the time to make banana bread very often, although I love it.  I also love peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

Norma - You know what?  You are right about freezing them for later.  My daughter does that but I had forgotten.  Maybe hubby and I will 'save' the bananas...  Good idea.

Andrew - Yes very important reminder....don't slip on the banana peel.  You are right about most accidents take place in the home.  It wasn't too long ago, I tripped over my dog during the night and almost broke my tailbone.  It sure woke me up.  Thanks for responding.  I appreciate it.  Have a great Thanksgiving.

Jo, I think this last batch, we ate 2 out of 8.  I just don't notice them sitting on the cabinet and they only stay yellow for a few days.

Kay, a rotten banana means it is time to make banana bread.  If I don't have time to make it when they go rotten I just throw them in the freezer and use them later.

I hate to say it.  I , not unlike  Elvis, like peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

1 pretty ripe nanner

3-4 plops of peanut butter

2 tablespoons honey

Mix er' up and spread on toast

Put a litter real butter on the toast before the mix goes on ,  for a real treat.

I eat one every now and again but my better half (Kathy) loves them so there are rarely any left to toss.  She does the banana and peanut butter sandwich thing but with a twist... she adds mayonnaise.  Ugh.  I swear I don't know where she picked that up but I can't even stand to watch her make one.  haha  Happy Thanksgiving!

They go in the freezer in a freezer bag full of ripe bananas.  When the power goes out we get to throw the overly ripe freezer burned suddenly thawed bananas away. Otherwise if we don't lose electricity we put them in the blender with ice cream and drink a banana shake.  Either way we feel good about our frugality about bananas.   Carnac sent me.

Peanut butter and banana works for me.  Banana was my favorite ice cream which I guess is not the case across the nation where not as many polled picked it.  But now have found pistachio seems to be the choice in summer at the local dairy bar!

On the encouragement of Carnac I am here to take the survey:

  1. 75% get eaten the others thrown out.
  2. Actually I like to use the banana in place of the bread, with the peanut butter in the middle. Yum!
  3. I don't cook.  It's very dangerous I hear.

Happy New Year,

kk

I am also here because of Carnac, I would say 40% have to be thrown out and I do not eat peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

Carnac says....

In my home, about 75% of the bananas are eaten.  But we don't like peanut butter.  And bananas in anything else, yech!

I, too, love bananas.  They don't get a chance to turn brown in my house.  Love them with my Cheerios!

Yes, I like bananas.  Like Patricia, I like them with my Cheerios.  I'll go one step further to say, I cut them up into bite size pieces, so I can have a banana in every bite.  I now only buy one or two at a time to avoid having to throw them away.  Oh, one more thing, Carnac sent me, too.

Banana Bread RULES!!! I actually had made so much of it awhile back, had to take a break.

But I'd say it's 2 out of every 5 here that get thrown out. I SWEAR, I can see them change from the store to the house....NO KIDDING!!!

Bananas and Peanut Butter....I don't know about that combo!

I must say that I like peanut butter and bananas for breakfast.  I met a guy that rolls peanut butter/banana in a torilla.  Haven't tried that yet!
