I grew up in a house and lived there for 17 years. It was a 5,000 square Foot "Oil Eater" as my dad used to say. It had 3 floors and a basement...an unfinished basement. When it was time to get rid of the house, we had a Realtor walk through who said that we had to do something with the basement. It had concrete walls, piles of sand in corners and several different rooms which included a laundry room, wine celler and boiler room...which housed the furnace. Now, I know that as you are reading this, you may be saying, "Wow, that is amazing" but let me tell you, it was no palace.

After the Realtors comments, we decided that we would have a clean up day as a family. The 4 of us spent the day whitewashing the concrete walls, hauling out bags of trash and sand and straightening every corner of the basement. The Realtor came back and could not believe the transformation. Not only was the basement an area not to be embarrassed about but it was a whole wing of the house that had unlimited possibilities for buyers.

We definitely felt a sense of accomplishment as well as had a great bonding day. The same holds true for your listings. We often are called upon to assist our sellers in many different ways. From helping to arrange a garage sale to hauling away trash after they have moved, we do whatever it takes to make the deal happen. I truly believe that these extra steps serve to bond us with our customers and it sets us apart from agents who only look at this profession as a 9-5.

It is amazing what a little bit of elbow grease can accomplish.

Jim, what a wonderful story.  I bet you and your siblings look back on that time spent cleaning out the basement as one of a happy experience.   You're also one of the agents that go the extra mile for their client, and I applaud that.

Great story Jim.  We've had similar experiences in the past.  After all the work we had re-bonded with the house and didn't really want to sell anymore.

Matt - There was no grease harmed in the making of the basement.

Kris - We still don't talk about it! Kidding..it was a fun time

Larry - That was discussed. I would hate to be the Realtor on a deal like that. We would kick ourselves and ask why did we tell them to clean it up anyway!
