Well, they should have nothing in common.  The interior of drains should be smooth to allow liquids and debris to drain properly.  Someone had the "great" idea of developing the "accordion-style drain," as I call them.  They are for the amateur plumber or homeowner who just can't get two drain pipes to meet up.

Sounds like a good idea in theory.  But look at the picture below and you can see that debris can easily catch inside while draining.  Not to gross anyone out, but think about toothpaste and all the other things that come out of your mouth and into the drain.  It will catch inside the ribbed portion of the drain and sit there until some unpleasant biological reactions start.

I hope you know a little bit more about a house and home inspections now.  Take care.

this has to be a joke, right?  were there a lot of other really strange things going on in that house?  did you laugh out loud in front of your clients?

Joanne, I see it every once in a while.  Many times it's someone who tried to flip a house and made it look cosmetically nice, but not practically functional.  I've learned to laugh inside my head now, as to not offend anyone  ;-)

Georg, thanks for stopping by, I'm glad I could add the awareness.  My wife and I went to Maui for our honeymoon, it's beautiful.  Maybe will be back for our 10th anniversary?

Oh my.  I guess I should have called a plumber before you came over.  My brother was from Scotland.  He fixed the drain, honest.

Joseph - Easy to install and very easy to clog.  It looks like a perfect habitat for slime and bacteria to me.  I can't believe this is legal.

David, the sad part is that hardware stores sell this stuff so the common person thinks it's okay.
