Yes, it does appear that The Donald made a social call on my Michigan real estate blog yesterday during the Yankee Blog Swap. (A big thanks to Mary McKnight and RSSPieces for a great idea well executed!) Though I have my doubts that it actually was the real Donald Trump, I had to capture that screen shot for posterity.  If you haven't heard of MyBlogLog, check it out.  It's a lot of fun to see who is visiting your site.  While having The Donald visit was a hoot, it got me thinking about other things.

There are many rewards to blogging.  I value the camaraderie, the sharing of ideas and the opportunity to learn from my fellow Rainers.  Points are nice but one of my goals in blogging has been to attract new business.  My other blog and my website have been around for a while.  Last year I got enough business from them to make it more than worth my investment of time and money.

Many of us with outside blogs and sites have tracking programs that allow us to see what is being read and how often.  I, for example, know that people looking for millage rates for Oakland County Michigan end up on my blog fairly often.  Why?  Because every year I do a new post about the millage rates.  People like to know about taxes, I guess.   I can see the phrases that they have Googled, so I know why they ended up on my site.

On ActiveRain we can't see the queries that brought consumers to us, but perhaps we have gotten calls or comments from them about our blogs.

So, since AR just launched Localism.com, I thought it would be helpful if we could share what we have found that is working for us.  If you have outside blog or site and you would be willing to share examples of top search phrases that would be great.  I think this could help steer the rest of us into creating better and stickier consumer content. If you have an AR blog, what posts have created a response from consumers?  Specific examples appreciated.

I am hoping we can all help each other create great consumer content.

I'm anxiously awaiting my new RSS Pieces blogsite, which i am hoping will be the right level of Web 2.0 and stickiness and classiness and professionalism to make it into a true community and not my current blog which is hidden on my current site.  hidden because it's a template.  i can track the visitors to each post on my other blog and it's the news stories that seem to get the most traffic-but i don't know if that's going to turn out to be quantifiable traffic yet or not.  2007 is going to be really telling!

Congrats on having the Donald visit your site. . .Even if you don't think it's really him.  Wow if it is!  I will check out locality.com to see what it is all about.  Thanks for all your creative blogging.  I also like reading what's happening in my old stumping grounds.

Maureen that is too cool! And yes, this whole blogging, memeing & social networking phenomenon has incredible marketing potential and we're just scratching the surface of it.

Hi Maureen - The ActiveRain Team is working on Localism.com not Locality. I expect many of the top search phrases will be (city name) homes, (city name) real estate, etc. NAR studies have shown that people look to find home info far more than they look to find an agent. I would be interested in knowing how much traffic finds sites by directly typing the URL versus search engines, and then how those agents are marketing their URLs.

My other blog is NOT all real estate... a lot of the searches are food related, you'd think there was more food on the site than there is....  Zillow is popular 3 out of 4 months?  Just a bunch of other real estate bloggers looking at my site?

From Google Analytics top 5 search terms by month since August:

August
1. brutus burger
2. zillow
3. columbus ohio best restaurants
4. best restaurants columbus ohio
5. Amazon Grill Columbus, Ohio

September
1. "Local Lender" + "his company" <--- him ?  Looking for himself?
2. real estate
3. brutus burger
4. columbus ohio best restaurants
5. Lewis Center

October
1. columbus ohio
2. slot machines ohio
3. zillow
4. Another RT blogger looking for links for herself by name? <--- My blog is on RT blogs
5. best blogs

November
1.  Worthington Ohio
2. "columbus best blog"
3. PMI
4. Westerville
5. Powell Ohio

December
1. voyeur
2. zillow
3. Columbus Ohio
4. pete flint
5. Dublin Ohio

My real estate section grew by 3% in the time I was posting Market Reports on it and grew to a page rank of 4.  Now I post the Market Reports on Active Rain and then link to those blog entries from my other blog.

Location, location, location

Maureen,

Your market reports were part of the inspiration for this blog. They seem to be controversial at the moment.

Brutus Burger reminds me that a few months ago I had someone googling "bryant tutas" 5 times and landing on my blog!

Zillow is my number on phrase this month too.  I am sure Drew Meyers is happy about that.

Thanks Mo F, I am going to go to the AR post on Localism and add the trackback wish; I'm sure they know we want it but a reminder is always good lol

The Donald was everywhere yesterday, I noticed him on your MyBlog site, and also on Christine's post for the Yankee Swap.  Don't forget, Paris Hilton is a big search item : - )

My number one this month is "voyeur" ... could be scary people on my blog... hopefully they exit quickly. I guess I would rather have Zillow starved REALTORS® on my blog than those searching " voyeur" but I invited them with my title.

Congrats on the Donald stopping by, I thought from Teresa's blog she thought it really was him...tongue in cheek...

Those that want to say "There oughta be a law" against using Market Reports or against anything seem to think AR is in a vacuum... that the blogosphere does not exist.  That you can legislate, lay down rules about what is fair competition. Handicap Active Rain bloggers?  Or whine and harass others in the spirit of Active Rain ... "hey no fair"

I had blogged about Brutus Burgers at Wendy's intl.. at least once... I don't think I have blogged about Bryant Tutas ever.  The one lender I blogged about once and I think he was in the habit of checking my blog for his info every day after that... multiple times... with the same "Name" + "company name" search for it to come up that much.

Hi All:

I want to wish all a happy holiday season! and health and prosperity to you and yours in 2007!

First of all, I missed out on the Yankee swap thing... never knew about it... would have loved to participate...

Second, while the blogs we run distinct from Active Rain are relatively new, and so we have no real data yet, I would love to participate in this long term...

Third... This localism.com thing is very cool... I see on the site for Rhode Island that there are two real estate agents with background about RI in the top... dont know how to submit to that site, although it seems to take content mostly from this one... any one have insight, or where to find more.

I checked out the Locality.com site. I think it's going to work :) Still being in the beta phase, there are a few kinks that need to be worked out....I've found many clients to be doing searches on tax information and insurance information for their homes.

JP, I am paid in AR points.  I tried to serve them for dinner last night, but my family complained.

Carole, Trackbacks allow you to know who has blogged about you by leaving a comment in the blog you are referring to in a blogback.  They don't don't help you know what is appealing to consumers.  But the would be great to have.

Maureen in OH, I think the law we need is to stop telling everyone what they are doing wrong.  It's better to focus on what they are doing right. That is kind of why I posted this.

Paul, why don't you join the carnivals and contests group.   We try to collect all of the postings about what is coming up there.

Scott, I think its those kinds of things that really are what end up being the bait.

JP,  If she wants to defend the spot, she knows what she needs to do.  I say go for it.  Don't hold back.

I got plum, so maybe that is a sign, JP.

As I mentioned in the "other glue post", the statistic updates I do on my web site and now my blog, get the highest traffic by far. Now currently my blog is just a freebie from Earthlink and it's not at all like those you guys use. (I'm kinda holding out hoping RL will set up a platform for us.) But I put SiteMeter on it an am amazed at how quickly I'm getting hits from other states. And several of them are repeats ... meaning it's sticky. And when I check Submit Express, it showed up quickly as a backlink to my web site.

Maureen McC: real estate and voyeur .... hm-m-m-m. You may be sorry you used that word. ;-)

Voyeur? I used it about ten days ago no problem .. my comments are not even on hold waiting for approval.  I thought I might have to switch comments over but I have not had a problem. It has been searched for and people landed on my site because of it.   There was a time I got bad spam on my blog and had to approve comment but that seems to have been filtered out.  Hardest thing for me was spelling it.

It was more for you, Jeff B. since you said you were starting something with Mary.  Though I would be happy to see Jeff T there too.

Don't worry, Carole, MBL cannot even begin to consume your time like ActiveRain.  I probably spend less than 5 minutes a day there.  Where as AR, well, I don't think I have spent just 5 minutes in one day on AR since the day I joined...

Thanks to Ms. Maureen, I also found the MyBlogLog and it is a great way to build community. I joined the Donald's group hoping that he would "return" the favor :-)

That being said, I have a friend that met the Donald a few years back regarding a business he was running. And while Donald's a supreme buisnessman - my friend found him to be very interested in the details about his work. I had an image of a guy that just sat back and allowed his legions of employees do the work for him, but he seems to always be looking for new ideas. So while I'm doubtful it is him, I also wouldn't be totally surprised.

One of the great things about MyBlogLog is that it SHOWS up who has been visiting your blog. So there seems to be a drive for people to recipercate links. I know that if a new face pops up on my list, I'm off to investigate who it is and how they landed on my page.

One of my "rules" of blogging ... If you do a Google Search for something and can't get the answer. Then that's a blog topic. I haven't used that yet on my Delaware OH blogs, but have on my baseball blog -- and those are usually the most searched pages.

Right now, my third most searched term is "Delaware coffee shop"

Another new toy I like is "ClustrMaps" which will tell you where your visitors are coming from. It is kind of cool to see the map on the side of the page and know that somoene from Australia, Hawaii, South America, Europe and all over the US and Canada have visited my site.
