At a public forum on November 14, committee chair Michelle Tosado explained the proposed expansion and renovation of the already existing Barnstead Elementary School. The plan is to get rid of the existing "D" wing to make room for a new two-story addition that would be used for the seventh and eighth graders on the first floor and the fifth and sixth graders on the second floor.

The new space would also be used for shared teaching areas including a media center, and room for specialty programs such as speech therapy.

Renovations on the existing building would include: a new gymnasium, administrative offices, Art rooms, industrial Arts room, Health and Family and Consumer Sciences, and a new music room. Other parts of the building will receive updates and modern equipment.

Other improvements will include an access road around to the back of the building for a drop-off area and a total of 120 parking spaces will be available.

If approved the project will take 18-24 months and would house 850 students based on a projection of a 14 percent growth rate over the next 20 years.
