maui high surf

I like to sign up for email alerts about the weather, such as flooding or high surf.  These can be very helpful when you live on an island, especially if you live near the coast.  This week there have been a number of high surf advisories.  Here's one that came this morning:

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has continued the HIGH SURF
ADVISORY for the NORTH AN WEST FACING SHORES of MOLOKAI and NORTH FACING
SHORES of MAUI
effective until 6:00 a.m. Sunday.

Surf along north facing shores will be 18 to 22 feet with locally higher sets today.

Surf along west facing shores exposed to the northwest swell will be 10 to 12 feet with locally
higher sets today.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: BEACH GOERS ARE URGED TO STAY OUT OF THE
WATER
AND WELL AWAY FROM THE SHORE BREAK DUE TO THE HAZARDOUS WAVE
ACTION AND STRONG RIP CURRENTS.

The NOAA Weather Broadcasts can be reached by calling the following numbers: for Maui 871-6706, for Moloka'i 552-2477, and for Lana'i 565-6033. The NOAA Weather Internet services can
be found at www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl.

Civil Defense Agency alerts are available via e-mail. You can subscribe on their website

windsurfing big waves at Jaws Maui

This is a photo from Jaws, on the north shore of Maui.  It's a famous surf break that really getting rocking with the big wave season in the winter months.  Those are windsurfers on the face of that wave!  A high surf advisory is a call to action for these people.  Only experienced water sports enthusiasts should even try going out in these conditions.

Above is a picture of a "small" wave at Makena Beach, which is actually on the south shore, but I think it's a nice shot anyway.

Be careful in the water here on Maui, it can be very dangerous!

I have seen the North Shore in Honolulu at 18 to 20 and it is scary, I hope people stay out of the water.

Wonderful pictures, Georgina. The water is so inviting, even with high surf, you can still look at it. Thanks for the brief Hawaii visit.

Elaine - Yes, it can be scary.  Unfortunately every year a number of people die and get seriously injured by not being respectful of the ocean.

Bonnie - It is amazing to watch the huge waves rolling in.  They have SO MUCH power.

Georgina, silly us who live nowhere near big waves!  I always thought a big wave advisory would be a good thing.  It's from watching too many Hawaii 5-O reruns!

Surf advisory is a great feature for an area like yours - I subscribe to similar here for fires and extreme weather conditions or snow advisories - good for you to let people know of this great service

Patricia and Thesa - It pays to be prepared.  We also sign up for tsunami warnings.  I guess I should blog about that too.
