I am often asked how much real estate do I need for horses. I most often answer one acre of land per horse with shelter for wet times in the Kernersville NC area. From March to October is the the pasture season and after that hay forage feed will be needed. One caution with this one acre is that it can become overgrazed easily. I practice a rotation of pasture allowing fields to rest and regenerate. The acre suggested should be established forage and only count the space that is actually in field. Having trees in the pasture is not bad, but should not be counted as open pasture for grazing. This total may be different in different parts of the country or the use of the horse.

Not to mention, the soil type can make a big difference in carrying capacity, as can the topography.

Nice horses!  Names, breed?   And WHO is that horse you're on on your website????

I try and stay away from soil type and direct specific questions to the county extension office for testing. The horse on the site is called Papa (5 year old gelding) he is a walker. He holds his head well. Thanks for responding Tricia!

In this neck of the woods, soil type varies enough that, in some areas, we have to know where the "pockets" of horse-appropriate land might be, because some of it is located tucked away surrounded by acreage that would be just GREAT for your vet's billing, but not so much for your horses. ;-)  Of course, the ag agent is the person to talk to about testing and such, but overall, I try to know where land that can carry fewer than the normal number of horses (if any) is located to save time and effort and broken hearts.

Walker, hmmm?  I would have guessed Morgan from the head and carriage.  (That's a complement, by the way.)  Beautiful, beautiful animal.  Made my heart go pit-a-pat.
