Melinda Peterson was convinced...

She was convinced she had it under control... or so she thought!  Sometimes life deals you a bad deck and you still have to play it...

For the past couple of months, my heart has been beating over 100+ beats a minute, all day, every day.  It's like running a marathon 24/7.  You'd think I would've noticed when I was short of breath and totally exhausted... but no, I just kept on running.

I had a real estate business to run, I had an MLS to run, I had a restaurant to run.  After awhile, you simply run out of energy to keep on running.  Have you ever felt that way?  I have, but mostly because of my Graves Disease.  It has a mind of it's own and it raises its ugly head when I least expect it.  I was convinced I had it under control, but it taught me a big lesson these last few weeks and now I'm paying attention.

For the past 5 years, I've managed my disease without medication through a healthy lifestyle. Although, it's difficult to maintain a stress-free life when you're responsible for so many working parts.  Last week, my doctor told me that my disease was in a toxic state and if I didn't take the meds it could be life threatening.  That got my attention!  Add a couple of tumors to that equation and you've got a pretty alarming wake-up call.

My body was in a HYPER state and it needed rest.  I've spent the last 10 days resting and re-evaluating my crazy schedule.  Sometimes, we get so damn busy that we forget to pay attention to what our miraculous bodies are telling us.  Some of you have been there and done that and you know exactly what I'm talking about.  And some of you are like me, who have to be hit over the head with a sledge hammer to get it (slow learners).  Our business and our busyness can wait... our health cannot.  Take care of yourself... I know I'm going to ;)

OMG Tammy!  That had to be so scary... how is he?  Sounds like we are two peas in a pod!  I'm being good and taking the meds ;)))

Our bodies are pretty miraculous to take all of the abuse we give them, huh Carie!  I'm listening and hearing it loud and clear now.  Thanks for your words of encouragement!

It's strange Russell... it's a week later... but hey, I'm grateful.  Thanks for stopping by again.  I'm feeling much better this week!

Thank you Evelyn!  Sometimes, life has a way of getting our attention, doesn't it?!  I love the way you describe how we measure success ;)))  Thanks for visiting!

Be gentle with yourself. Sometimes it's so very hard to slow down and take the time our bodies need....but they do have a way of insisting if we don't!

Good grief, Mel, SLOW DOWN. Yes, you have a lot of energy, but I'm afraid to break it to you ... you're not Superwoman. Take your meds and be Supergrandma instead.

Thank you Joyce!  I've had lots of rest in the last couple of weeks.  I'm kind of going stir crazy ;)

Dennis ~ Thank you for the re-post... sounds like you can relate!  I wish better days ahead for you my friend!

I'm finally getting it Nancy!  It took a bump on the side of the head for me to notice, but I'm listening now ;)))

Good grief indeed Cynthia!  I'm retiring my wonder woman cape for the time being.  Rest assured that I will be resting and taking the meds!

Mel -- Sometimes we are all convinced we have everything under control and it couldn't be further from the truth.  I am happy that you listened to your body and are doing what you need to do to get better. Don't let it happen again.  Thank you for reminding all of us we need to slow down and take better care of ourselves. Feel better!

Mel:

I am so sorry to hear about your illness.  But now since you have decided to follow your doctor's advice to rest and take your meds you will get better.  Real estate can be a stressful job, so take it easy, relax and get well.  That is the important thing to do.

Hi Mel--your blog title caught my attention and then the picture did.  I am sorry to hear about your health.  You sound a lot like me a few years ago.  My husband was convinced that my "busyness" would put me into an early grave.  I had to learn to relax, to read a book, to stop.  It wasn't easy and it sounds like you are making great progress.  Good for you.  We get the wake-up call and it is wise to heed it.

Our bodies are like "mom"...always knows what to tell us and we pretty much blow it off until we have that epiphany...mom (and our bodies) ultimately are usually right. Good luck!

Mel-I'm glad you caught yourself in time. Type-A personalities (I'm making a big assumption based on your post that you are one) really have a tough time slowing down. Good luck in slowing down and managing your health situation.

Mel, I hope that your health comes back in full force.  Take it easy, lay low, and just let your fingers do the walking through the Rain!

Mel, I haven't been around for a while and sorry I missed this...glad you're learning to "take five".  I've also been in the restaurant business and know how difficult it is...I actually recently thought about opening up a restaurant and still practicing real estate, but a good slap to the side of the head cured that.

A friend of mine has been living with Graves Disease for a few years now and when she gets stressed it sometimes rears it's ugly head...she's also learned to "take five".
