Empty Parking Lots, Not a Student in Sight

Empty parking lot at Blinn

It is not too often that you find an empty parking lot in the Bryan - College Station, Texas area on the day after Thanksgiving, especially when A&M is playing the Texas Longhorns at home.

But, I did.  Since the arena was too wet, I couldn't ride my horse.  So, I drove to my office at the Blinn College campus to pick up the HUGE stack of papers that I need to get graded.  The last three months, I have been teaching four real estate classes.

Even though my business has suffered some,  I have felt blessed to be in a position that I can have a positive impact on persons that are planning to go into real estate.  I love the real estate field and want buyers and sellers to have the best possible experience.  I believe education and professionalism are  extremely important.  Thus....that is way I'm taking the time to teach the real estate classes.

Anyway, as I glanced at the stack of papers to be graded, it dawned on me that the students have less than TWO weeks of school left.  Part of that time includes finals.  I find myself feeling panicky.  Can the students in my contracts class fill out a contract properly?  As I think back to the last exam they took, we all should be VERY grateful that many of these students have decided they will NOT pursue real estate as a career.  I have the huge stack of papers to grade in part because grading papers frequently depresses me.  I guess I am just not willing to accept that every student doesn't care enough to study.

See =>>> too much grading to be done.

Some students don't care.  BUT, some do.  I have met some awesome students that will be a pleasure to work with in the future.  It sounds like most will choose to work outside of the Bryan College Station area.  That includes San Antontio, Austin, Houston, and the D-FW and the rural areas in between, if I recall correctly.

I'm excited for these people because they have the potential to do very well in the business and make all of us in the real estate industry look good.

I'm trying to figure out what little morsels of information that I can give them in this next few classes of information that will truly help those who plan to take the Texas Real Estate exam and work in the field.   I plan on having them check out the Active Rain site.  I am new to Active Rain, but I've discovered it has a ton of information and it will give them a glimpse of what Realtors and the real estate business is really like.

Any suggestions or words of wisdom?  I'm teaching contracts, agency, investments and property management.

Not a student in site on the Blinn College campus, so I just took the time to admire the fall landscaping.   If you are interested in knowing more about Blinn College, visit  http://www.blinn.edu

Wow! I was surprised that the parking lot was empty as well. I have a lot of family in Texas (Houston area mostly) and they are always going to home games and have a hard time finding someplace to park.

Anyways, as for your class I would suggest that you also go over morals and values if you can. If you want more subjects, ask your students what they would like to learn. I find that asking them what they want to learn will help you plan for future classes as well.

Charles,

Thank you for your response.  I've continually tried to emphasize morals and values, but I will stress it again.  I wanted to use this post as a way of telling the students this is what other Realtors thought was important.  I'm glad you suggested that.

At the very beginning, I asked students what they wanted to learn but it might be interesting to do it again.

Retired and loving life

Morning Sondra-I thought I would return the kind gesture and go back to your first post. Much better than mine. I am curious why you decided to move from Texas to Colorado. Definitely different climates and from what I have heard about Texas the traffic is terrible and the weather in the summer is very hot while Colorado is more rural in many areas and the winters can be cold and snowy and the summers are very nice. This was fun coming back to the beginning of your blogging. I at one time wanted to be a realtor but decided after a while I am better suited to what I do. I would be a nervous wreck and stressed out all the time.  It is wonderful that you also teach. Grading wouldn't be too much fun though. Not everyone is dedicated. Thank you again for your kindness and commenting not only on my first post but also the current ones. Happy Friday
