How do you view your blog?

How do Search engines view and look at your blogs?

New research suggests that internet users are increasingly relying on search to find local service businesses, potentially taking mind-share away from traditional print yellow pages and classified advertising.  What does this have to do with me and my web site? Well, you want them to find you on the internet. In order for this to happen, you need to make sure your sight is well-defined in several areas. Basically making your site sexy to search engines. Part of this was taken from David Wallace. Most of the top part was taken from  Greg Sterling.

Web 2.0 Technologies and Search Visibility

CSS and Web 2.0 -- Are these more than mere buzz words? They are advancing technologies that bring vast improvement in the design and usability of web sites. What about search engines? Do these new technologies help search visibility or hurt it?

Let's define 2 terms first,  from Wikipedia.

1.  CSS, short for Cascading Style Sheets, is a style sheet language used to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML, but the language can be applied to any kind of XML document, including SVG and XUL.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the set of markup symbols or codes inserted in a file intended for display on the World Wide Web browser page. The markup tells the Web browser how to display a Web page's words and images for the user. Each individual markup code is referred to as an element (but many people also refer to it as a tag). Some elements come in pairs that indicate when some display effect is to begin and when it is to end.
Definition by: SearchWebServices.com

XHTML (EXtensible HTML)  A markup language for Web pages from the W3C. XHTML combines HTML and XML into a single format (HTML 4.0 and XML 1.0). Like XML, XHTML can be extended with proprietary tags. Also like XML, XHTML must be coded more rigorously than HTML.

Definition by: The Free Dictionary by Farlex

2.  Web 2.0 is a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004 which refers to a supposed second generation of Internet-based services - such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies - that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users.

Good or bad?

CSS is "good" because it is most commonly used to control font styles and determines the exact position of elements without bulky tables. Because CSS is typically contained in a single file, it enables one to hange the look and feel of a site very quickly.

Web 2.0 would be classified as "good" also. Because it is more about a specific user experience, sites that qualify to be classed as Web 2.0 properties typically and these sites are not at a disadvantage when it comes to search visibility. Scott Orth did a case study, his client experienced a 97% increase in rankings, traffic jumped 53% and targeted conversions increased by 59%.

Some of this has been taken from http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=3624222 for more information.  Web 2.0 Technologies and Search Visibility

Summary:  You basically want to make you sight look sexy to the search engines. You want your codes to be valid. What is valid code? You want good "key words" and or "descriptions".  You also want to utilize back links, forward links, and deep links to help the search gods. Another great post by Mary McKnight describing these such links. Using links like an SEO pro to increase traffic and retain visitors  By using these so-called tools above, they can attract other sites that search for your web sites.

What you don't want is invalid codes or to be off topic. A good example of this is if I were doing a blog on mortgages and part of the blog was talking about sports and what I like to do during the weekend. This would be off topic and your blog won't be searched properly or picked-up by the big boys.

Extras:  Here is a tool to help you find key words. Download Good Keywords  And all of this mentioned above can certainly help those in the real estate industry move ahead of others for 2007.

And an honorable mention goes to Mary McKnight of RSSPieces that gave me the inspiration to write this blog. The birth of a blog: 3 days in the life of a baby blog -- 3 main points from her blog are boosting traffic, google blog search, and press releases.

I love the picture!

1. the topic is about creating the "sexxy" for your blog

2.  From a controversial standponit - it sticks.

Well done, Jeff, and you said you were nervous writing on this topic!

FYI: AJAX and DHTML are two other technologies you might want to add to the list.  AJAX allows for fast loads of data and DHTML allows you to do all those cool FLASH effects within the searchable confines of HTML.

Read?  I got sidetracked with the picture...lol.

OK, I read the blog and much of the stuff is already on my site.  I use CSS as my main template and work from there.  Also, my main blog incorporates technorati tags to link over to that.  I am sure there is more I can do, but I will say it has me hovering around #15 in the rankings for "florida mortgage" under Google.  I consider that great considering there are over 10 million in that category and it is a highly competitve category.

My search rankings are higher in more specific areas that I target.  This is good info and I will see what else I can incorporate.

BTW, I was tempted to put one of my sexy pictures, but I don't think anyone wants to see me in a thong...lol.

Mary is always such a great resource... she's got so much on the ball. Great job on the post Jeff, you almost sound like a geek. (thumbs up!) CSS is great for so many reasons but consistency and the ability to make sitewide changes is key.

I'm afraid to mess with my old site too much because of the good placement... but it really needs an overhaul with some updating *shrug*

Jeff, another excellent post. As I see things, the web is evolving into more and more of a social experience, just look what happened a few days ago here on AR with memeing! Social interaction set on fire.

Great point you make about deep links, a lot of people seem to ignore that one or aren't even aware of it. Re Download Good Keywords, I found one of the best ways to place yourself in front of the most valuable traffic is simply to check your daily site stats and to ask your visitors how they found you.

We check our website statistics each night to see how many people came to our site, where they came from, how they found us, which search engine(s) they used and what words/phrases they typed in their search to get to our site. I used this info to get into the top 10 search results for hundreds of phrases related to my business(will be blogging about this in the new year).

We also ask subscribers to our newsletter how they found us and I'm amazed at the detailed responses we get. Again Jeff, excellent post!

Jeff - Sorry about the lack of MEAT in my comment. Though I started out as a pup in a technical field and went to an 18 month Tech School......and worked a bizillion years in the electronics/computer field....I ended up in Quality Assurance (mainly on the H/W side, not S/W ) and Account Management.

I get the IDEA you posted - the marketing part - , but cannot add to technology part of CSS and Web 2.0., advantages/disadvantages.

Jeff...sounds like you are up to speed on some of the technorati that drives SEO....Im learning new stuff every day too, thats the thing with technology, just when you think you've got it down, it evolves again....a game of perpetual catch-up...Thank goodness for people like Mary who can make it all 'work'.

Jeff, I'm glad you mentioned the fact that we should stay on topic.  I think that if we want to go off topic here on AR, we should categorize those posts as "Members Only" because it's my understanding that the search engines can't index those pages, so it shouldn't negatively affect our SEO efforts.  Interesting choice of images, BTW.
