I am always surprised with the strength of my reaction when someone famous dies.

Last night when my mother called to say that Whitney Houston had died I was stunned.

Whitney Houston is one of my favorite singers and one that I had always hoped to see perform live.  Despite all the downs in her life her unforgettable talent could not be denied.

As a child of the 80s and 90s it seems like Whitney provides the soundtrack for my life.  Her songs bring a smile to my face and often conjour up memories of people that I haven't seen in years.

I think my strong reaction was not necessarily one of shock because for many years we have watched her falter, it was instead disapointment.

I had hoped that she would have made a comeback and been able to recapture her former greatness.

I am so deeply saddened that one of the most talented women of our time will have her career punctuated by an asterisk which will describe her drug abuse and ultimate demise.

Despite her poor choices, she is absolutely one of my favorites and I am really sad tonight watching the tributes to her life.

Rest in peace Whitney - gone way too soon!

Hi, Stacey.  I know exactly how you feel.  Michael Jackson's death hit me particularly hard.  Take care.  Music has such a huge effect on us, doesn't it?

I know what you mean.  Although we saw the downward spiral, read the stories, saw the news, knew it did not look good, in the back of our minds I think we always had a glimmer of hope she would eventually get on the right path...it is always so painful to see someone with extraordinary talent make such devastatingly poor choices, but it does not take away from the fact she was one of the most gifted singers we will ever know.

It also is a chilling reminder that even folks who seemingly "have it all," sometimes end up with nothign at all.

RIP, Whitney.
