31 Comments on Is it time for NAR to take back our data on Realtor.com?
I only pay NAR when I have to pay dues. And I stopped paying Realtor.com at least 4 years ago. I never got a call from anyone on realtor.com, and my listings sold without their help. How about emailing the NAR CEO in addition to a letter?
Joe, I think it would be a good idea to have this post be open to the public, and not members only. The public (our consumers) need to see that this type of "mistake" is not OUR fault, but the lax attitude of Realtor.com on the integrity of the data.
Thank you SO much for bringing this to our attention.
I iwll do anohter follow up post and make it public
Were we sold out by NAR on this one?? You betcha. Is there anything you can do to "take back" Realtor.com? NOPE. Contracts were signed before NAR had the vision to see the true value of the domain, and this was the result. Now it's BIG MONEY, and there's no good reason to change it.
Don't even get me started on the mapping issues!
Oh so my next post should be mapping on Realtor.com? Jonathan do you know how long the contract is for?
I am curious at what point NAR could legally take back REALTOR.com.
Will all the hype about how Realtor.com is a top site for consumers to check on listings, don't you think they would want to be the most accurate and professional site available? None of this is happening and I find it to be a bad business move on the part of Realtor.com not to open themselves to our suggestions.
Good points, Joe! I think this particular ship sailed way back when Homestore/Move.com took control of R.com years ago. That was probably the biggest mistake ever NAR made, IMHO. Or at least one out of many...
It's just lazy programming. Education.com has the this whole space covered very well. If Realtor.com wanted accuracy, they'd license it.
I don't think NAR can take back what they gave away. Can they?
I kind of like that if someone is interested in schools they need to be working with an agent because Trulia, Zillow and Realtor.com don't cut it. They don't cut it on attendence areas within a school district and NOT with school districts in our convoluted market anyway. Maybe closest to works in other markets.
I can understand your concern as a seller though. Until I saw your post I did not realize that Realtor.com did not at least have school district info for a listing. One of the earliest things I ever "said" on Zillow was a comment about a Brookside Colony address (Dublin Schools) having info about Brookside Elementary (Worthington schools.)
Joe:
If we could take back our Realtor.com info, I think everyone would agree that we should do that. But is that possible?
Joe really good point made here! I absolutely agree with this going public. So many buyers are using Realtor.com and are missing great homes that are in the school district they are looking for all because they are not loaded correctly.
Joe, Realtor.com leaves a lot to be desired. They really believe they're above and beyond all of us, even though without us they wouldn't exist.

Joe - This is one of those issues that I have to wonder about sometimes. How is NAR helping us by selling us out basically and taking our data so that they can charge us for their site?
What you read between the lines is that there needs to be a system or mechanism for changes to obtain accuracy.
NAR sold us out long ago and dosn't run Realtor.com. It is no better than any other syndicated site, they all take our data, corrupt it, don't purge old data, none of it is entirely accurate or up to date and then lots of us are paying to advertise there? How much stupider could we be?
Again the feeling is that Realtor.com really is not listening to our needs.
Joe,
I completely agree and will write a letter. Our local MLS does not require agents to even be a Realtor and HALF of all their members are not. They all automatically go to Realtor.com and get the same benefits as a Realtor. We should not be billed for every little thing and this should be a perk of being a Realtor. I feel no need to be a Realtor anymore if a regular agent can get the same exposure at the same price on a Realtor website. We should have it included in the NAR fees.
Thanks Kim for your comments!
