Edit: 4/10/08 (83,000 members)

We're closing on 60,000 members in Active Rain.  Yesterday saw 44 Newbies join our ranks, from places as far from my Tucson home as Vancouver, British Columbia and Ponce Inlet, Florida.  With so many new members, and so much content to wade through, it's hard to know what to do first as a Newbie.  1st:  Read and re-read the ActiveRain Community GuidelinesYou'll come up the curve quickly, and you'll save yourself a lot of grief.

2nd and Always:  Write a post for your blog.  Google will never find you if you don't post to your blog!  If you're from a non-blogging background, writing that first post can be intimidating.  It doesn't have to be, as you'll see shortly.

Blogging is no different than teaching your child to tie his or her shoes.  First, Mikey, we make a loop like this...  The difference getting started on your blog is that, for the moment, you're in the position of the child.  That's uncomfortable for any adult.

You expect your first effort to approach perfection.  You agonize over the title.  What to say?  What to say?  In your heart of hearts, that nagging voice telling you that no one will want to read your post anyway.

You couldn't be more wrong.  We're waiting to meet you--to get to know you and the business you're nurturing out there in your corner of the world.  Interaction between members is the genius of Active Rain.  It's why Google gravitates to this website when potential customers search for answers to their real estate related questions.

That interaction won't happen unless your words connect in a way which makes me (not everyone--just me) want to comment on your blog post.

What works?  Blogs that "work" are personal.  I know from checking Statistics on my home page (bottom left) that dozens of people will read this post, but I'm not talking to a crowd.  I'm just talking to you.  Your first blog will attract attention and garner comments if it's

  • simple,
  • open and
  • free from pontification.

One Newbie posted this for her first effort:

Hi everybody!  I just joined today and would love to know what are some of the first things you did to get involved and get results from this community.

Thanks for your help!

She got 44 comments in 24 hours!  That's how it works.  So have at it!  Enjoy yourself and have fun!

Hey Mike,

Good ideas and I'm sure the newbees will appreciate the asistance. It is amzaing how quickly the membership grows.... and it is growing at a faster rate as more people join because more people are passing the word.

Mike, great post. I wish I would have had this post when I joined. You are right it will save new people a lot of grief. My advice to the new people would be to subscribe to your blog, as it continues to help the new people and the not so new people. Thanks for your work.

I would ass that people needn't worry if they write a post that sucks.  I know that I have written a bunch of posts that aren't good... not even mildly.  But, if I don't keep moving forward, I won't write any more good ones, either...

11/24/2007 09:56 AM by Lane Bailey - REALTOR & Car Guy (Diamond Dwellings Realty)

Hi Mike, You are amazing.  i love your posts.  They are always so helpful.  This is great for someone like me who is a novice.  This is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Mike,

Excellent!  I love the "simple, open, and free from pontification" (expected you to write: google it)!

I would add one suggestion for newbies as well as everyone else.  PLEASE use spell check and re-read what you typed... it may not be what you thought you said.  Don't you agree?

Mike,

Thanks for the guidance. Oh, and for those of you who are wondering...

Pontificate - to speak about something in a knowing and self-important way, especially when not qualified to do so

It is true that personal blogs gets responses, which makes sense. If what you post is conversational, conversation naturally follows.

Very deserving of a star, Mike! You captured the anxiety of a newbie well, and followed with sincere encouragement. "Blogs that 'work' are personal" is great advice for new and established writers.

Mike,
Great advice for the Newbies.  I did not know there were guidelines when I joined, much less read and adhere to them!

11/24/2007 01:59 PM by Cynthia Tilghman, RealtorĀ® Onslow County NC Home Specialist (Kingsbridge Realty, Inc)

I don't think we had any rules or guide lines when I started here and there were so few outside blogs from members that I had a list of them.

11/24/2007 02:03 PM by Teresa Boardman (Keller Williams)

Well goodness Mike, you're just racking up the featured posts!!!  Nice post to help out those new to AR, and those who aren't who had no clue there really are guidelines to pay heed to.

Mike _ Thank you for the post. I read it and the linked post. I consider myself still a newbie only a couple months posting but I just invited my Mom to join and sent her the link to this post so I'm hoping it will give her the confidence to get her picture up and write her first post. She has many years of experience to draw upon and that can only be good for AR.

Someone in Ponce Inlet joined? That's my neck of the woods. I'd better go say "hello".

11/24/2007 06:11 PM by Lisa Hill (Daytona Beach Real Estate) (Adams Cameron and Company)

Lisa:  One of the first things I did after joining Active Rain was to search out all the members in Tucson.  I've never had the idea that we're all competitors.  Just the opposite, in fact.  Thanks for commenting.

Judy:  You're welcome.  Why not do a post introducing your Mom to the rest of us?  I'll come welcome her to Active Rain.

Ann:  It's the Active Rain version of the old hymn, "Will there be any stars in my crown?"  LOL  Thanks for stopping by to comment.  I appreciate you.

Teresa:  When you comment on my blog, I'm honored.  Thanks for visiting.

Cynthia:  It's always good to see you; thanks for commenting!

11/24/2007 11:13 PM by Ann Heitland, Associate Broker, CRS, GRI , ABR ~ Flagstaff Real Estate/Community (Team Heitland at RE/MAX Peak Properties)

I've been a member for approx 1 mth and have learned a little about blogging.

It's been interesting, because I feel that it does allow me to make the comments that I have not been making, but have wanted to with a bit of frustration attached. We all have our opinions based on a lot of factors and it's really very educational to see how others in the same profession actually work & play. I am certainly learning everyday and hope to build some lasting professional relationships.

11/25/2007 12:03 AM by Ilona Rivera Professional Realtor (ERA Trademark Realtors)

Hi Mike:  Another great post.  I really wish I would have gotten some start-up guidelines when I joined AR, and that was only three months ago.  I'll have to go back and look.  Maybe I didn't ask ?   What a concept !  Asking for help, and then actually getting it.  Cool !   Thanks for sharing.

By the way... my "what does the graphic say?" word is "pimenta.  Is that a female pimento ?

Mike-

Thanks for being a good sport and commenting on my first blog! As a blogger newbie... It can be intimidating. I appreciate all the helpful suggestions and encouragement. Great Post.

I'd also suggest for newbies:

CopyBlogger.com

I found some great pointers there regarding headlines and basic grammar fubars to look out for. :-)
