Active Rain For Dummies...An Destruction Instruction Manual!

You Newbies out there, listen up! I will let you in on many 'inside' tips that will enhance your AR experience and your entry into the 'blogging world'!

Do I have your attention??? Thank you!!!

  • First of all you measure your 'prowess' here on AR by 'points' not time or experience.
  • Virtually every question you have has already been answered here by an AR member...I defy you to find it.
  • When you do read something informative, 'bookmark' the post...then you'll be able to refer to it later and with ease!
  • Do not plagiarize...use your own ideas and content in your posts...if you have a 'cite' or 'quote' use it appropriately.
  • Feel free to comment on any post on which you feel the need to.
  • Don't use the comment section of another's post to 'advertise' your services or link back to your profile...that can easily be done by one who may be interested in doing so.
  • Never 'attack' another person...every member deserves respect...whether or not they agree with your opinion or are in competition with your business.
  • Don't use Active Rain to sell yourself...promote yourself without selling your 'stuff'.
  • Humor is permitted and encouraged...if you can politely and tactfully 'defuse' an ensuing confrontation, do so...we are self policing.
  • Become a subscriber to bloggers who interest you...model your posts on the styles you like...then add subscribers as you go...it's like adding to your library of favorite books!
  • Don't get discouraged if you can't do something...persist in trying...you'll get it eventually...I still can't embed You Tube Videos...but I can easily enter graphics in seconds which used to take me hours!
  • Don't write directly to your Active Rain post...I write in 'notepad' then copy and paste to AR...Since doing this I haven't lost any material in cyberspace.
  • Be faithful in reading as many of your 'subscribed to posts' as possible...this will establish your good will and credibility with others on AR...of course comment when able!
  • Find some groups to join...those that interest you or you have something in common with...to join a group you usually just have to click on the group site at 'join group' and presto...do the reverse to 'leave a group'!
  • Write your first post...write about anything...keep it short...pick a 'catchy title'...like exercising, getting started is the most difficult obstacle...writing it is easy! Then respond to any commenters appropriately!

Active Rain is like a huge ship with almost 60,000 passengers...look around, become familiar with navigational tools, and other amenities which the moderators have made available to us...and Happy Sailing!!!

Since I'm three days new to Active Rain, I found this helpful and concise.  Your advice about writing in  notepad and then cutting and pasting should save me some frustration.  Thanks!

Thanks I love the Active Rain Emblem with your name how did you do that?

Good Post Fran.

All are great points except you missed one.  If you feel you need help, JUST ASK!

11/24/2007 03:12 PM by Daniel Sundberg Foreclosure Specialist (Crystal Springs Real Estate)

Sondra: There is so much other info readily available...search around...this just scratches the surface!

Rene: An associate at work did it in 'paintbrush' believe it or not...took her a couple of hours...would have taken me weeks!!! :)

Daniel: I agree...that's the best advice of all, really!!! This is why comment threads are so important to a post!!!

Thanks,   Fran

Always good to be put in reminder even for veterans.  I'm not claiming by no means to be a Vet or close to one on Activerain.  I'm still learning the rules.  I was put in check a late as last week for being a novice.

Great advice Fran~ short, sweet and to the point.  I, however, still find that oiur search function is lacking.

Good list of tips to help new Rainers get started, Fran! I say we give bonus points to the first one who can show you how to embed a YouTube video in your post.

Fran, TY. I'll have to try the notebook approach myself. I have lost 3 posts that I had to start all over with, of course it never happens until the last sentence is typed.

Dale: Glad you liked it!

Duane: For clarification, 'notepad' is a simple 'windows based' word processing program...I write my text in notepad, save it there, copy and paste into my AR post, then insert graphics or links appropriately!

Thanks,   Fran

I am looking forward to getting the most out of Active Rain...especially when I expand my business into New Mexico!  Being able to network with people in both states will be a big boost.
