Who Says The United States Really Cares About Saving The Earth?

For any of you lost souls that think saving the environment is really on the closed door list of high priorities for the United States... I'm sorry to inform you that you've been snowed.

Even the hybrids available in the United States cannot complete with the Volkswagen Bluemotion Polo.  This car gets a combined 71 miles per gallon, but isn't available in the U.S. (can you say leftist governmental regulations? Very Good!).

Here's a shot of the VW Bluemotion Polo...

 Volkswagen

When Washington really wants to get serious about fuel economy... VW is ready to give us 71 miles per gallon.

P.S.  A recent road test by the guys at Top Gear got over 80 miles per gallon from a full tank (over 800 miles).

One presumes the car isn't available here solely because it drives on the wrong side of the street.  :-)

Seriously, what is the cost of this diesel marvel and how many does it seat?

Hi Cameron, we have all been snowed for YEARS....71 miles per hour, how about 100 or higher.....Detroit could have done this 50 years ago, ut now way would the oil companies allow it.

Not the oil companies Ronald, or every other modernized country would be just like ours (without these highly efficient cars).  It's all the "save the ecosystem politicians" imposing ridiculous demands on automakers who would like to introduce these autos here in the states... safety regulations, emissions regulations, etc.

Cameron, when the people in power own Oil Companies and or Companies supporting the industry it will  continue to be business as usual promoting the gas guzzlers, SUV's and inefficient automobiles.

Sorry Carlotta, but it sounds like you're a casualty of the media.  What you say sounds good on the surface, but the logic isn't sound.  The high oil prices are pressing the market to come up with electric vehicles.  You're saying the oil companies are trying to put themselves out of business.  Not true.  Other industrialized countries have people in power just like us, but they have economical cars.  It's our governmental regulations keeping these cars out.  Auto importers have been bumping heads with those green police politicians for decades.

If what you say was true, they wouldn't have gas guzzler penalties for cars that use an excessive amount of gas... because as you say, those in power want "gas guzzlers, SUVs, and inefficienct automobiles".

Your government has an agenda, and it doesn't include representing the views of the people.  They think they know better than you and that you need them to care for you because you're not capable of taking care of yourself.

Very interesting.  There is some great conversation going back and forth here.  I've re-read this in it's entirety, and still pondering.

I'm all for gas conservation, but please give me break with these rolling bean cans. They are just one slight mishap away of trapping you like a sardine. BTW we don't live in China where the equivalent size to a vehicle is a bicycle.

Hi Cameron, sounds like a car I could use, especially since gas went up again this weekend.

Cameron,  Thanks for highlighting this car!   For some reason our government has been convinced that diesel is bad for the environment.  One of our cars is a Smart For2.  It gets about 35 mpg.  There is a diesel version of it that is available in Canada.  Can't get it here, though.  Of course, one can't take buyers out in that!  I drive a 12 year old Mercedes C230 Kompressor.  This lovely car can do 33 mpg on a full tank of gas when driven on the freeway.  I realize some day I'll have to replace it, but can't think of anything that will measure up!

Hi Cameron,

There is the Mitsubishi all electric, which is running in many cities right now, the Nissan Leaf, which is all electric, and the Chevy Volt. The  Chevy volt is unique, in that it has a gas motor that just drives a generator to recharge the batteries. If driven carefully, it can get better mileage than you quoted...

Wow 71 mpg is impressive. My Dad had a Fiat Spyder that would get between 47-53 mpg back in the late 1970's.

We used to own a Honda Civic in the 90's that got 40 miles per gallon. Now you'd be lucky to get 28 miles per gallon in a new Honda. What happened there?
