With the rising heating cost, heating the home this winter is a major concern for many in the Mid Hudson Valley region.

Did you know there is a Federal program which gives funds to the States to help low-income families, the elderly and disabled to meet their energy needs?  The program is known as HEAP which stands for Home Energy Assistance Program.  New York State makes sure that this money is filtered down to the counties.

To be eligible there are certain criteria that have to be met , for example income, family size, is the person disabled etc.  To find out if you can benefit from this program you need to fill out an application that can be obtained from the social service offices. If you are a successful applicant the money on your behalf will be paid directly to the energy company.

Here are the numbers to call for the counties of Columbia, Dutchess and Ulster:

COLUMBIA COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

518-822-9089

DUTCHESS COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

845-486-3000

ULSTER COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

845-334-5436

Jennifer with oil, gas, and electricity prices being what they are I am sure that there will be many with the need for assistance from this program, and it is good to know that it exists.

Jennifer,

this is a good point, we need to check our furnace one time a year to see if everything is ok and change our filters every month to save on the bills, it is always good to check, because there are some carbon monixe and other things that if you do not check it, you can be on risk.

This program includes a "Furnace Repair and Replacement component." That's exciting.

Excellent post. With the cost of fuel energy today, many families actually need assistance to heating their homes. This is valuable information.

Jennifer,
You are always thinking of ways to provide information for people in your area.  This is an excellent idea and I am sure a resource needed by many this year.

George - I am sure more people will use it this year than in prior years, such a safety net is needed.  In a houshold  without gas or oil they sometimes try to get  heat in other ways which could prove deadly.

Ray - Maintaining the furnace is also necessary.  The consumer who benefits from the HEAP program can also get their furnace repaired under the HERR program.

Rosario - There is a related program for the furnace repair HERR.

Derrick - With the cost of heating oil I think HEAP budget will be exhausted.

Cynthia - I love providing useful information to the public, this I think people should know about, it is already cold here.

Carol - Yes this is a program that is available statewide which is a good thing.

Larry - The price of heating this year will certainly take a big bite out of a family budget.  Good to know some will be able to get help.
