Naples Pier

For fifteen years, I've had the pleasure of visiting the Naples Fishing Pier, at one time or another, and have loved every minute of it. No matter how many I've seen them, it never fails to amaze me how absolutely beautiful the sunsets are at the Pier.

I've avidly fished the Pier, like many before many before me, and have stood out there all hours of the day and night, in hopes of landing that prized snook, sometimes only to come away with a multitude of broken lines from the big fish breaking me off on the pilon barnicles. How stunningly beautiful and peaceful it is late at night, with the summer lightning strikes from all over the horizon, signalling the distant storms. Many a moment has been captured on film at this time.

The Pier was built in the late 1800s and a system was developed that shuttled goods to the Naples Hotel. Ships would drop off the cargo at the Pier and a light rail system was used move those goods to the hotel, which stood a short distance away and is now the parking lot behind Tommy Bahamas.

What has always fascinated me most about the Pier is the wonderful variety of people that you can meet, while strolling along toward the western end and back. It is there you will meet people from all walks of life, from the ultra-wealthy of Port Royal, who look as normal as you and I while dangling their rods in the water, to Europeans on holiday with great stories to tell. No matter what time of year, they are always there and it is great, especially if you are a people watcher.

If you haven't been in a while, like myself, maybe it's time to visit again and relive that warm feeling of why we came to Naples in the first place.
