This Large Mountain Lion was spotted and shot near Ruidoso New Mexico

A friend of mine recently sent this photo of a Mountain Lion that was spotted in the mountain resort community of Ruidoso New Mexico.  Reports were that the animal was seen in a residential areas and near a local school.  Apparently the Mountain Lion has little fear of humans which prompted New Mexico Game and Fish to locate and kill the animal.  Opinions were mixed about the demise of this gorgeous, healthy and fearless lion.

Hi John, Wow, what a large lion!  Do they not relocate lions?  In Florida, our problem is alligators.  I think most days now they kill them as well but in the past, they have relocated them.  I can see where he was a danger to people, it's just a shame he had to be killed.  Thank you for sharing!

Aw poor kitty. It is heartbreaking when they have to put an animal down, but it's often for the best. Once they lose their fear of people it's an accident waiting to happen.  Recently, they had to do the same thing to a big cat over in Bend, Oregon near my son's neighborhood, he'd been killing deer in the area and getting very close to homes and playgrounds.

It's a sad reality, the more we push into their habitat, the more they push back. :(

What a beautiful mountain lion - one of the biggest ones I've seen.  I'm with the rest - isn't there a relocation system in place?  What a shame to have to put her/him down.

John, Being an animal lover I hate to see photo's like this but you have to look out for us humans! What beautiful animals if there are more around I hope they don't end up like that one!

Wonder why they didn't try to tranq and capture that gorgeous creature. Very sad.

That's a BIG cat!  It's a real shame they couldn't do something to relocate it instead of having to kill it.

John, it would be panic stricken if I saw this large animal in the woods!   We have mountain lions in the hills, and you do need to be conscience of your surroundings!    Sad to see such a beautiful animal be put down, but cannot lose human life either.

Wow, John, that is some awesome creature!  I'm with Joan, I think I'd be a bit panicked if I came whisker to whisker with this guy!  We have mountain lions and lynx in areas near us and the horseback riders and hikers are always on the alert.  Another great localism post for the gorgeous New Mexico mountains - beautiful and fearless!

One fat Cat!  This cat was doing ok on the diet.  To bad it had to be put down, it very well could have been eating pets or people could have been feeding it unknowing.  They have to be put down when in populated areas.

That mountain lion is huge! I really hate that it had to be put down, but if it was hanging around a school, then I guess it was for the best. Too bad, though. It was a beautiful creature!

That's big one....but you're right, this would generate mixed reactions. Like...couldn't they  have tranquilized the cat and relocated her somewhere away from civilization where she can be in a natural habitat.

I agree with Linda.  In a perfecty world, they would have relocated him.  But, that probably wouldn't work.  He was a great animal though.  Sad to see.

That is a huge lion and it's super sad that they had to kill it.  I guess safety come first, but still all cats - big and small - are so cute.

Nice size lion! Appears in the area of 190 pounds. These cats get much bigger than they advertise. To bad he had to go, to relocate him would have been a much better idea imo.

I was interest about going to this city until I saw this picture... you all should be ashamed for promoting hunting & show off the picture on website. It just show me that you are too busy showing off man-power (with weapon)... that shows me that you don't have compassionate toward to animals. So disappointing.
