Jonathan Schwartz, the former CEO of Sun Microsystems, has just announced a new internet startup that aims to support caregivers and those they look after. Mr. Schwartz sees the site as a source of assistance with the confusing array of issues associated with the care of an elderly family member, and has styled the service around his personal experiences with his own parents. The caregiver support the site will provide is completely private, not funded by any advertising, and the information added to the system by caregivers, doctors, family members and anyone else granted access is not shared with any other third parties.
CareZone is designed to allow health care workers, caregivers and related family members to share information running the gamut from patient information and personal observations to prescription instructions and routine progress reports. The former CEO was inspired to launch the private site after assuming caregiver duties for his parents, who are in their 80s.
Online repositories of information make the care of an elderly person so much easier to handle. There is a move afoot in this country for people to take control of their own medical information. Easy access to this data in a centralized location, access to which can be granted and managed by a caregiver in line with the wishes of the individual they care for, can mean a much easier and less stressful experience for all involved. I really think this is the way of the future, and I am excited to see what CareZone can accomplish as the first to market with such a cohesive package.
