The End of QR Codes?

Google always seems to be coming up with some innovative way to stay in the loop and even on the cutting edgeof technology.  Last year, Google Circles became a social buzz and this year they’re creating a rival to QR codes.

Recently, I came across an article in which the author was convinced that Google’s latest Mobile Visual Search (MVS), Google Goggles, will quickly surpass the growing QR code trend.  But, I’m not so sure.

If you haven’t been introduced to MVS yet, it’s basically an application that allows you to take a picture on your smartphone of an object and within a few seconds, your phone brings up all there is to know about it.  The appeal is that, instead of a 2-D flat object that has limited visual interest; you’re scanning the actual 3-D object in which you’re interested.

While this truly is an impressive idea, it’s still in its infancy and has limited capabilities if you think about putting it to work for real estate marketing.  For instance, it’s ideal if there’s a well known monument you’re standing in front of, or a book you’d like to get more information on... it even works for searching out a great place to eat.  But what about a recent listing you put on the market?  Having a QR code on a sign in front of the house still seems like the most sure fire way to directly link people to all they need to know about the home.

Here’s a quick video explaining MVS.

MVS really will be a useful tool, and one that will no doubt be a top app this year, but there still seem to be some lingering questions about how it will really work.  Questions such as:  How can you tell if an object has MVS scanning capabilities? or How do marketers specify what shows up when someone scans their logo or product? are just a few that still need to be answered.

So, for those of you who’ve invested in changing up business cards, signs and other marketing tools to include QR codes; don’t worry!  You’re still right on track with allowing people to quickly access the information they need, and can control exactly what’s going to come up on their smartphone.

As for the future of Google Goggles and MVS, we’ll just have to wait and see!  It seems that for now, QR codes are still alive and well and won’t be fading away any time soon.

Our goal as Real Estate Virtual Assistants is so make sure you’re up on the latest trends  and technology and we’ll try to keep you updated as soon as we hear of something new!  Of course we always love hearing your feedback, so feel free to let us know if you’ve had any experience with MVS or what your thoughts are on the difference between MVS and QR codes.  Your comments are appreciated!

Hi Corrine, thanks for the comment! QR codes are still helpful for your print marketing, because they allow people to "scan" on their phone and immediately get redirected on an online presence. We also still feel it's useful because more people are starting to recognize them in storefront windows, etc. However, more advanced technologies ARE starting to come to the surface, so we're definitely going to have to keep an eye on them. We wouldn't rule out QR codes entirely though.

Kathy and John, this service definitely looks very cool AND useful! We're going to have to look more into this. Thanks for telling us about it!

Robyn, thanks for the comment! I'm so glad that we could tell you about something new. This is definitely something to keep your eye on, because it may soon become integrated with some of Google's other services. It may just become the "go-to" QR code resource.
