Washington Island, in Door County, Wisconsin, hosts its own top-notch music festival each summer. The Washington Island Music Festival, now in its sixteenth year, offers ten days of Festival Events, plus its highly-regarded Music Camp.
The Artistic Director for the Washington Island Music Festival is Stephen Colburn, Principal oboe with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Composer-in-residence Dan Hansen is a well-known Washington Island musician.
Festival Musicians come from among some of the finest symphony orchestras in the United States. Participants include clarinetist Diana Haskell of the Chicago Symphony, hornist Norman Schweikert (retired Chicago Symphony member), Michael and Beth Giacobassi (violin and bassoon) of the Milwaukee Symphony, and Milwaukee Symphony members Nathan Hackett (viola), Timothy Klabunde (violin), Catherine McGinn (bass), Scott Tisdel (cello) and Samantha George (violin). Other Festival musicians include Stefanie Jacob (piano), Diane Kahlscheurer (Festival Chorus co-director), Kathi O'Connor (Festival Chorus co-director), Marlee Sabo (soprano), Julie Duncan Thornton (flute), Michael Thornton (horn), Wayne Wildman (piano/harpsichord) and Douglas Anderson (baritone).
Concert tickets are just $12. Students under 18 pay half-price admission.
