Buying a house is an exciting experience and moving into it a busy time – boxes to unpack, friends to notify, and finding your coffee maker. But in all that excitement, there are a few important items to take care of. When you move into a new home, make sure you do these things first.

1. First thing to do after buying a house is change the locks

The truth is you can’t be certain that the keys you have in hand are the only ones there are. Who knows how many copies are floating around? Be safe, and have the locks changed as soon as you move in. When you’re buying a house, you want control over who has access to your new home.

2. Replace batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors

You have no way of knowing when the batteries in these alarms were last changed, so it’s better to spend a few extra dollars and be safe rather than sorry. Test the alarms and detectors when you put the new batteries in to make sure they all work. It’s a small thing but important thing when you’re buying a house.

3. Change the address on your driver’s license, car registration and voterregistration

Your driver’s license is your most used piece of identification – make sure both your license, and your car registration, are updated. Many people actually forget to do this when buying a house, which can lead to unexpected and unwanted outcomes if something were to go wrong. Also update your voter registration so you have a say in what happens in your new neighborhood.

4. Find the main circuit breaker and water shut-off
