Before you plunk down the big bucks for the new gizmo, keep in mind that two years from now it will be junk!

Before you plunk down the big bucks for the new gizmo, keep in mind that two years from now it will be junk! When I was a young man, I rode the crest of technology. It was an expensive ride. Having the latest and greatest of anything was a very expensive proposition.

As I have become older and hopefully wiser, I realize that although the trough arrives a little bit later, it still gets there just as fast! And life in the trough of technology costs a fraction of this week’s hot item!

Impulse buying has long been both the marketer’s ploy and the scourge of the consumer. A good marketer creates demand where there is none.

When I think of the number of things that we say we “couldn’t live without” I am reminded that for the first part of my life we did just that and survived very nicely, thank you very much.

As for all of my “time savers,” I work more hours a week now that I ever have. That is an inescapable truth.

These days, I let the demand for a gadget settle down before I make a purchase decision.

And more often than not I find out that I wasn’t missing out on anything in the interim!

Yes, i am ordering a new computer today!! This one is about dead... but simple, fast and with way too much time figuring out just what deal to get. The fancy ones sure are pretty and tempting, but i am the practical one here, so function and speed will work just fine!

I must ask though.. what gizmo tempted you to write this post??

Hi Richard, I have to agree with you.  We spend a lot of time on setting up and keeping up with gadgets and programs that are supposed to save us time and that are supposed to be the latest and greatest -- only to be replaced next month by a new "latest and greatest".  Like you, I find that I am working more hours than ever before.

Technology is a tool like any other.  Getting the newest gizmo is a waste of money if it doesn't add something to your business or life.

Richard - Oh how true this is!!!  Sales people are the worst buyers - we tend to fall for the great promotion on new products.  Actually if something last two years now that is a long time.  I, too, try to curb by thirst for the latest and greatest.  As for the time savers....right!!!  Having said all that...I DO love technology.

Do you really need it? How will this device make me money? What will be my return on investment? Just some of the questions I ask myself.

Richard, Good post. I'm looking for a tablet, but am waiting to see what changes are brewing in that markeplace segment over the next month or so...I agree, I no longer have to be one of the early adopters.

I recently bought an Iphone 3GS. The price? Only 79 bucks. The latest and greatest 4g was something like 400 bucks. And there was a line of folks waiting to buy the 4g. The best part? We don't have 4G service in my area!

So true! Wasn't all this technology supposed to simplify our lives and save us time? Life is just as busy if not more so with all of these tech tools! Great post!

I tend to feel a sort of "peer pressure" from other agents and even managers to run out and get the latest and greatest. But it simply is not affordable to do that, and I've learned that as you suggest, quite often I am just fine without it.

Awww, you are taking the fun out of shopping!  But you are right - most of the time, you aren't going to need the latest gadget that will be either outdated or a new version will come out in a few months.

Richard, it is disheartening to spend a hunk of money on something and then, 3 months later, there's something newer, faster and better.
