I've got a friend (as I'm sure we all do) who has been without a job, has refinanced and the list of woes goes on and on.
Was this person somewhat responsible for their current situation? Of course, as we all make choices, and sometimes we make better choices than at other times. Does this mean they don't deserve a second chance, or the gift of hope? No, it does not.
Still, I knew it was tough to be without a car; Jacksonville, FL has a less than fabulous public transit system, meaning it can take you 2+ hours to travel from one side of Jacksonville to the other (and a recent TU story about the JTA drivers did not instill confidence).
I have recently been in a position where I could help this friend purchase a used card, which would allow greater freedom, and the chance to get out of the house and hopefully, get a job and get back on their feet. And, this would not be a loan, this would be a gift, with no expectation of being repaid. Ever.
We picked up the car yesterday, and this friend was so happy, you have no idea. They wanted to know what they could do to help me, or repay me.
I texted: Pay it forward to someone else who needs it. Everything happens exactly as it should, when it should.
