What's your latest technology?

By

What hardware or software have you recently purchased?

Is it changing the way you work?

Two years ago I asked the opposite question:
What was the very first piece of personal technology you owned?

That post was a fun project. I traced my personal technology all the way back to 1958 when I received the HearEver Germanium Crystal Rocket Radio for a Christmas present. I was just 8 years old then and to me it was an amazing mysterious piece of technology. How did it work with no batteries?

The HearEver Germanium Crystal Rocket Radio – 1958

To surf the radio-sphere you’d push and pull the antenna. It wasn’t stereo, there was just one small earphone.

I spent many a night lying in bed listening to that little radio. My imagination soared and the world became a bigger place.

Fast forward to late 2011 and I’m at a conjuncture point where every piece of technology I own seems ancient. Yet, the stars align and like divine intervention a bunch of new technology suddenly shows up in my life.

Since the first of the year a new PC at work with Windows 7 Enterprise and MS Office 2010, then the iPad 2 and now my new iPhone 4s. Oh Baby, believe you me I’m not complaining! But I do admit to feeling a little slow in the head at times trying to figure out so much "new" at the same time.

What I’m curious about is your latest personal technology.

What’s the most recent hardware and/or software you've acquired? Does it simply fit into the way you already do things or is it changing the way you work?

For me I think it’s going to be a radical shift.

I’m still on a learning curve and figuring out something new every day, but I can tell you already the iPad 2 and especially the iPhone 4s are changing the way I do things.

For starters, I’ve lightened my load in the field. Now I rarely have the need to bring my laptop along.

We all know toys are toys and it’s not about the next shinny object.
But as my Grandpa often said... “You gotta have good tools!”

What’s your latest hardware or software purchase?

Is it changing the way you work?

I think my newest piece of technology would be my kindle touch. I got it for Christmas and I find I am reading more, just like I used to before Facebook, Twitter and smartphones. I love my new kindle! The piece of technology I got before that was my iPad and that's what I am using to respond to your blog post. It is mounted on an X stand, which is on the coffee table in front of me so I can type on it and play with it hands free. :-) I have stopped printing out papers for listings I show and now just bring the PDFs on my iPad. I love it! And how FUNNY - the word I have to spell below, for authentication is "blackberry." ;-)

Thanks Stephanie! I love to read also, so the Kindle would be awesome. I too find with the iPad I love being in a meeting and pulling up a PDF or going to a website and simply passing the iPad around so everyone can take a look. It makes for a lot more flexibility on where to meet. You don't need a laptop and a projector etc... (love the "blackberry" authentication!)

We've started using dropbox online...it's working better than go to my pc for us... I can save files/photos/etc into the dropbox file on my PC at the office, home computer, laptop, IPAD, phone, etc and access it then anytime from any of them as well...works slick for me!

Hi Rich: Followed back to IXACT... very interesting. I like the fact your contact management system is totally web based with nothing to install..

I think even in the 70s my first piece of technology was a crystal radio from Radio Shack. I loved that Christmas.

Todd: I wish I still had mine! I think my Dad got it at the Wigwam Store.

Ok, Rene, you got me interested again. Since my son is 10, I thought this would be perfect for his birthday and this is what I found online.

ha ha :O) the Elenco MX-901C looks great. On his way perhaps at electronic experimentation! I use to love those little projects you could by at Radio Shack and build little amps and switches to control blinking lights.
