Tom's list is very much on point.  I also like to add that a good contractor puts the quote in writing so there is no confusion - no 'I thought you said $500' and 'no, I said $650'.  Put the quote in writing and everybody sign off.  Good post.

Look for these warning signs when hiring a contractor.

If you are in the market for a general contractor, it can be a scary proposition. It may be a small specialized project, or a large project lasting several months; finding the best contractor for the job can be as important as the improvement itself. Not all contractors conduct business the same way, some are less than reputable.

Don’t fall for these potential warning signs of fraud, rip-offs, and theft.

  • Contractor asks you to get the permit.  
  • They prefer cash payments.
  • caution tape warningHe has left over materials from another job.
  • Asks you to pay in full up front.
  • Door-to-door solicitation.
  • Does not have a listed business.
  • Does not have his own license.
  • Offers you a discount if you find other customers.
  • Offers guarantees and warrantees that far exceed the industry standard.
  • Pressures you for a decision right away.
  • Does not have any local references

 

Perhaps the most important thing that a property owner can do is to not get caught up in getting “just any contractor”. Acting hastily in hiring a contractor can prove costly in the end. Take the time to avoid these warning signs.
