Florida Mortgage | Lawmakers look to ban teenage DWT - Driving while Texting

Florida is considering joining 16 other states and bar teenage drivers from talking on the phone while behind the wheel.

Thanks to studies by Allstate Insurance group that have found that a high number of teens text message and talk on the phone while driving, Florida Lawmakers are spearheading SB504 and HB193 which would create stiff penalties for teens caught chatting or texting behind the wheel.

According to the way the bill is currently written, a driver 18 or under caught in a moving violation while on a mobile device would face an additional citation issued which would carry with it a minimum of a 1 point penalty on their driving record.

OK, I have a couple of thoughts...

Do we need to legislate common sense? Have we gotten to the point that we'll know something isn't stupid because lawmakers will have covered ALL stupid things with some sort of legislation?
Why should adults be able to text and drive? After all, if we are legislating common sense, why should adults get a pass?

If legislators really wanted to accomplish something, they would go through the actual laws and see what can go away. There are millions of stupid and outdated laws on the books. I can think of one that lived a long life here in GA that could send almost EVERY person here to jail...

Very interesting - Personally I still can not get the hang of text messaging (guess that dates me, huh). I can not understand how anyone can text and drive - it is almost like the new sign and drive TV ad I saw recently (think it was for VW) where driver is writing while driving.

I am guilty of Texting and driving... but 1) I have a blackjack with a full keyboard and 2) I try to keep it to a minimum and only while I'm at a stop light.... it is a convenience and often easier than a phone call...

Kids are just junkies with txting though... and talking in general. MetroPCS down here makes a killing on parents getting their kids unlimited plans for $45/mo... and for many teens, that's the only plan that does make sense.

Do we need to legislate common sense?? haha... ummm... when the majority of people are lacking it, it isn't a bad idea... but the question really has to be is it saving the teenager or the people that the teenager might kill because they have no ability to concentrate on the road?

I don't think adults should be able to dWT either... but fewer adults TXT in general! And... teen drivers should be forced to see driving as a luxury and priviledge, not take it for granted

More power to the lawmakers. But it should apply to everyone IMHO. It probably won't stop everyone because nobody thinks they're the problem, they will get caught and/or they will cause an accident.

However, I like the idea of throwing the book at them if they do have a moving violation.

I don't recommend depending on people's common sense. How many of us wore seatbelts before it became law?

David, I think it is just common sense. but wait a second we are asking people to have that...gee what was I thinking..
