"You're mocking me, aren't you?"

"You're mocking me, aren't you?"

Truly, that was one of my favorite scenes in Toy Story. Woody is most definitely mocking Buzz, making fun of his delusions about being a space ranger and not a toy.  I have used that line on my husband from time to time, though I lack the great delivery of Tim Allen...

Mocking can be funny, or it can be hurtful...depending on the circumstances and the people involved.  When my husband mocks me, it is usually in response to something I said or did that was sorta dumb, and I am laughing at myself along with him.

But what if I hired a professional REALTOR to help me sell my home, and instead of helping me, they sneered at me after our meeting, and made fun of my gaffes, made fun of my home...and then wrote a blog about it in a highly visible network of their peers? And then that blog gets "featured" by the network as a noteworthy piece to read....wow.  That's over the line, in my opinion.

Then to add insult to injury, several other "professionals" jump on the bandwagon and mock me as well, even though they never met me, never understood anything about me...but there it is...sure my name was not mentioned, but in reading it, *I* know it's about me...and the authors know it's about me...and chances are everyone in the office knows it's about me...

Is that cool?  Is that professional behavior?  Even if I didn't know it was about me, if I was planning on calling on a REALTOR to help me sell my house, I sure as heck wouldn't call THESE people...what things would they find about my home or my personality to make fun of?

We are professionals.  We have a job to do, and that is to sell homes.  Not mock the people who bring us business.

Ok, so their house wasn't updated.  So they were unrealistic about the price they wanted for their home.

That's why they need a professional - to advise them.

Not mock them.  For shame.  Makes us look like a bunch of jerks.

Karen, you're absolutely right. Even if the picture aren't "real" or the names have been changed, the public will still see stuff like this and think we're a bunch of idiots. Bravo for saying it!

Wow!  The post was even featured?

I know there are times when we need to vent, but in this social media age, it's best left off the internet!

I also know the post you are talking about. It's shameful! We have to be careful with what we say. I also scratched my head as to why it was featured.

Missed it.  Missed the Woody and Buzz line too but it's been years since I have seen the movies and I think I only saw the first two.

I will go look for the post you are referring to.

I want to write a post about "yes, you did need to paint the paneling and when you finally did the house sold" but it would not be worth it.   I don't write Members Only posts.  I have not in years.  I just squelch the urge.

I read your post and forgot to comment so I went to read some other post.  I came back to your post after reading another post that could have very well served as the catalyst for this post.  It just made me wonder if I had ever berated someone in that way.  I can say "maybe" I have.  I won't go so far as to dig back into previous post in search of such offensive post, but I say that as a result of your post and the offending post that I just read, I will take better care when writing in the future.

Funny, I knew exactly which post you were talking about and I hadn't even read the post.  I went back to look at the daily drop that featured the post; that would have been more appropriately marked as a 'members-only' post.

I haven't read the post you are talking about, but have seen posts like that before.  In fact, I have written posts like that before.  I don't attack too much, just a little bit.

Boy this post certainly deserved three gold stars. One thing is for sure, it says a LOT about that blogger. I would never refer my clients to them.

There is nothing to be gained by mocking anyone - period. Sure we all experience these "teachable" moments but we can teach and even share without hurting or demeaning anyone - especially our clients!

Karen I did not see the post and and I am not even remotely interested in looking for it.   I cringe when I see the things people write about their clients or fellow Realtor.  I can deal with being a boring blogger but one with sealed lips.

I have sellers call and list with us because they felt be-littled by a previous agent interview.  They were eager to make their house look ready for sale-even with limited funds.  Guess who gets the referrals later and guess who get the news about bad form spread by the consumer......

I agree that as a listing agent you just keep these things to yourself, posting them in an open forum is only giving you a moment of fleeting satisfaction that you feel superior.

I always enjoy that movie also, I do agree with you that the seller would be very angry if they saw that post about their home.

Buzz: "you're mocking me aren’t you" Woody: "who me? oh no no no, BUZZ LOOK THERE'S AN ALIAN" (Woody drops on the floor laughing hysterically). I love that movie and of course there are times and moments when mocking can be fun but I would hope as adults and professionals we wouldn’t know when those moments are appropriate. I agree with you Karen. It’s one thing to vent to a good friend or colleague your frustration it’s a whole other level to openly mock a client, even if you don't use names. This is the business of relationships right? Thanks for the post!

Toy Story is one of my favorite all time movies.  It is so clever and funny.

But when I read your post, I actually thought it was not a true story but a point you were making.  Imagine in reading the comments it was an actual post.  You have to be kidding me. Someone is that unprofessional?

THANK YOU ALL so much for your wonderful comments! I will be back tomorrow to answer them in a more friendly manner - had a busy day today and am just overwhelmed. Thanks so much...

Yes, sadly, this was about a real post. Yes, the real post did not mention names nor did they use the actual pictures (but that was not revealed until in the comments).  This was not only a featured post but it was also in the emailed newsletter Daily Drip.

I know the intent was to be funny.  The intent isn't as important, however...as the actual delivery...

I know what you mean, because I always question myself when thinking of a post that involves others. Can the agent or the homeowner ever think, 'is this me?' If they can, then I don't publish. it. Great post.

Thank you Karen! Too many times we see a post here or on some blogs that just belittle a client just because they don't know or fail to understand something. It is so wrong to do especially when are business has to do with the very people that are being mocked. They just go off complaining this and that, and it seems funny and good to get this off your chest at the time but, like a stone thrown in a lake, the ripple effect could be devastating. As is says in the bible, before you talk about the splinter in someone's eye, look at the log in yours. Thank you for bringing this point to light.
