Sean Taylor a football player for the Washington Redskins safety died today of a gunshot would that entered his groin area (femoral artery) and caused an injury so serious, his "bled out"...

As the doctors at our local nationally known trauma center tried to save his life...unfortunately, he did not survive.

Sean's home had be broken into only 8 days prior to this intruder managing to get into the bedroom. Sean's dad is a Miami sheriff!

What makes no sense to me, that is this someone who had the funds to have alarm systems, camera's, high tech security systems. I just wonder why none of these safety mechanisms were in place! I mean break in my house once (and it happened to me) and ADT was here the next day putting in my home security system.

Terrible situation. He left behind his girlfriend and his year old daughter.

Makes us reconsider, how safe are we in our own homes, how safe are we when we show other's homes...how important is your home security?

UPDATE:  Apparently, they have arrested 4 people in connection with Sean's murder and apparently two have confessed. Armed robbery, felony murder, not-premeditated.

Karen - It makes you wonder if the person who shot him knew him and was out for revenge of some kind. It seems really strange that nothing was taken from his home. What a tragedy!

Bill,

There has to be something behind this.  When his home was entered 8 days ago, they rummaged through his belongings...and left a knife on his bed...Why wouldn't his father, being a long time sheriff in Miami have encouraged him to get an elaborate home security system...This is so sad.

This is a tragedy, he was only 24, what is odd is that someone left a kitchen knife on a bed 8 days earlier.

This is so sad, whenever it happens, NFL player or the guy next door.

His friends and family should be in all our prayers.

Karen, I had not heard this... been out all day. How terribly sad, just like Britney driving her car when she can afford drivers. What are people thinking ?

Missy,

I don't know.  Someone broke into my home once, security system was in place the next day...now they are reporting that the phone line was cut...that would explain that if he had a security system in place why it didn't work as they run through the phone lines...

Our family has had season tickets to the Redskins since 1948.  I attended my first games in Griffith Stadium, then RFK and now the Cooker (I know it is really named FedEX field) but I like the first name better!  This is a tragedy for his family and especially his little daughter who will not get grow up with a father.

Karen - I read one report that he does have a security system, however it was not on.  I'm not sure which is correct.  I don't believe the severed phone line would make any difference in terms of setting off the alarm.  That prevents the security company from being notified, but the alarm would still go off.

It's also possible that his home was not fully or elaborately decorated given that he spends half of the time in Virginia, thus he might not have been concerned about an alarm.  Just a guess now, I don't know that for sure.  What I do know is that there's an 18-month old girl who will not ever know her father.

Of less importance but still relevant is that football has been robbed of a probably future Hall of Fame athlete.  He was the anchor of the Redskins secondary and the schemes were built around him.  He and Portis are my two favorite active players and this has been a shock.  BTW, I'm a Redskins season ticket holder.

Cindy,

My ex-husband is a die hard Redskins fan, I am not, but Sean lived only a few miles south of me...it is such a tragedy...

Hey Cindy, I've never heard the Cooker but  I like it.  We went with the Big Jack for a while even after Snyder sold the naming rights.  I'll have to use the Cooker.  Hehehehe.

Karen - as I understand it, the machete was in fact his. He kept it under his bed for security. he had it in his hand when he was shot.

Tchaka,

You are so right. However, I have an alarm system in my home...you see mine has been tested. If someone breaks in and you have it set to "stay" it sends out a silent alarm...to give the police time to respond without alerting the perpetrator. The phone line being cut, well that means the alarm company couldn't call the owner...they then immediately send out personnel. That also means that the owners cannot call 911 from the house which gives the police the location if you use your home phone.  His gf had to use her cell. Thank heavens he told them to stay in the bedroom and they were not all killed...This is just horrible...

Simon,

See as I heard, it (the machetti) was left on his bed 8 days ago, that's why he had it...not sure though.  There is more to this story!  I don't even think I would have had my gf and daughter in the house if someone had broken in 8 days before and rumaged through all my stuff. He was here recouperating from an injury. What is amazing is that his dad is a high powered sheriff in a county in Miami.  There is supposed to be a news conference tomorrow... Just so sad!

Roberta,

I don't think we've heard the end of this story.  Obviously, someone was after him for some reason. The shame of the matter is that he wouldn't have been here had he not had the injury. He was down here recovering. Such a shame.

Karen,

This was a terrible incident.  I personally don't know enough about the situation, however, I completely agree with security systems, especially when the house had previously been broken into.  If there was someone after him.... even more reason.  Just senseless.

Martin,

From what I understand, living close by, the telephone lines were cut prior to entry. My ADT system relies on a home telephone line. His GF tried to call for help first on the house line. The line was dead. She had to use her cell phone.  I have security in my home to...it runs on my house phone number...so I believe there were issues.

Bill,

If I had to guess, I would think this person knew him, knew his home, knew the layout as well.  this was not a small home. The gardner, or a friend of the maid...his gf lived there with their 18 mo.  Someone suggested a Realtor...I doubt that, but we'll see soon...After all his house was broken into 8 days prior and all of his stuff was rummaged through. His dad is a prominent police chief and heaven know's he had the money.

I think he knew who was after him...I just don't know why he didn't have more security for his family. Not that he could afford it...Police dogs or something...So sad.  His gf is Andy Garcia's niece! So I'm told.

Simon,

Maybe, He had felony charges as a younger man, couldn't have a gun...you may be right.

Karen, I'd like to point out that while he did have felony charges, they were plead to a lesser charge with the penalty being charity work and donations.  His record should not reflect any felonies.  I could see him not being allowed to possess any firearms during a certain amount of time.  Or else, maybe he didn't have anything around the house because of his young child.

Tchaka,

He had a machetti, told his wife to stay quiet, and stay under the cover's over their bed. Apparently their daughter Jackie was with them in bed as well. She heeded his advise. He walked out of their bedroom where the two shots too place. The one in his groin killed him, the other was in the wall. It wasn't about the 18 month old, he was there recouperating from an injury...his father was a prominent police chief in the area....

You will see, as I (JMO) feel, this was someone he knew, who knew his house, it was revenge...and it sickens me to think his father didn't direct him better for surveillance, police dogs, security, after a break-in 8 days before.  After all his gf lived there with their child Jackie full time.  He was there recovering from an injury...

 Makes me sick!

Karen, I'm aware of all that.....i'm merely pointing out that he isn't a felon and that it's possible he didn't have a gun in the house because of a small child.  As for the other security issues, I couldn't answer that.

I know what you mean, he was not allowed to have a gun in his house b/c of issues. It had nothing to do with his 18 mo daughter...I just he had more police protection and it is a very SAD SITUATION.

His gf is Andy Garcia's niece...

Karen like you said in your response to my post, why would you not have a alarm system in 2007. With all the money that you make. If you are going to buy a million dollar property,at least 10% of the purchase should go to installing cameras and a alarm system in the house. Now a beautiful girl is going to live life without her father. God help us all. Great post.

Sure doesn't say much about society if one must spend 10% of a home value just to protect it.

Tchaka,

I am told he had an alarm system, however the phone wires had been cut to the telephone lines to the house. So, in the same situation, I have an alarm, the system wouldn't have worked.  I don't know if the electric has anything to do with it or not, but his gf had to call the police from her cell phone...The alarm button didn't work...so very sad...

Karen, cutting the phone lines will not matter as far as the alarm working.  It does prevent the alarm from notifying the monitoring service, but the alarm should still go off.  Either these burglars were smart enough to cut the alarm wires or it wasn't turned on.  There are 4 guys in custody, maybe we'll gather info from them (ie, confessions!).
