I have heard this word so much this year that I had to write about it. I do not know of one word that gets me going more than this one.Almost is only in horseshoes and handgrenades. Then, I found this website today.

Almost only counts in Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

After last nights debacle of a game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphins, it got me to thinking about ALMOST. Then I hear a Dolphin fan say this morning "We almost won".  Last nights game must have used ALMOST 500 times.

Monday morning, I caught myself talking about what could have been if the Eagles had of scored the touchdown. It was ALMOST a loss for the Patriots.

Problem with this word is it means that you did not obtain what you set out to do. And for someone like me, a goal setter, ALMOST is nothing acceptable.

I've been thinking the same thing...it's ALMOST  like the eagles beat the Pats, the way folks are acting around here. meanwhile, the Pats are still undefeated!

Danny ... I like to hear people say "I almost didn't make it" but they hung in there until they did ... never quit!

Danny - Those Dolphins sure have a lot of problems. I still can't believe that they didn't go for the field goal from 43 yards after the delay of game once they got on the better turf. One thing that wasn't almost was the suspense of who would win the game. Despite a lack of scoring I was pretty entertained my MNF.

Danny, anytime you want to almost win at horseshoes..... bring it on!  :-)

I was sure that the Pats were going to lose that one.  It is just their year.  My big concern now is that the Eagles blueprint will be used by a good team and everyone has figured out how they can be beaten.  (I just reread what I wrote.... My big concern.  THAT is my big concern.  Man... life is good.)

Maybe the Dolphins will beat the Pats.  Wouldn't that be something.

Larry, then that is a good thing.

Martin, I got the jest of what you were saying and I agree.

You speak the truth Danny nobody ever remembers who ended up in 2nd place only the Champion is remembered. It is important that in sports and in life to give your all and go 110 % at all times.

hesitation / procrastination = certain failure

I couldn't watch last nights stink fest! I'd flip back once in a while to double check only to see 0-0 all the way into the 4th quarter with 8 minutes left and decided to NOT go back to see the outcome! Welcome to Garbage Bowl 2007.

I would expect this kind of non-scoring in soccer not in football and especially to have a final score of 0-3 is not my idea of a good game. I want to see scoring.

I agree with how much we use the word Almost...I was taught the same thing about it counting only in horshoes and hand grenades :)

Cris, that game had a total yardage less that what Miami normally gets in a game by themselves.

Susie, this is very true. Does not matter if it is 1 point or 50, you still lost.

Danny---- lol yeah......

Is it me or is the talent in the NFL on the downswing? It seems like there are more bad teams than good teams in the league. Maybe its the fact that younger players are taking over the league and the veterans are taking a back seat......................

I couldn't agree with you more, especially in this business!  Nothing actually counts until you leave settlement with that check in your hand!

Could it be that the general managers of NFL teams are making bad decisions on draft day? Or could it be that the college players just cant cut it in the NFL? The speed of the college versus the pros is quite obvious.

Eddy, I think that it goes back to the quality of the player and how he response to the difference of college and pro.

Danny thats a great point. An NFL schedule is a lot longer than a college football schedule and that creates more injuries for younger players. The NFL is much more violent than the college game.

Eddy, I have to agree with both of those statements. I think that players coming out of college are "thrown to the wolves" so to speak, way too soon and they are not ready for what happens. Case in point is Marques Colston who blazed last year and this year he has not done much of anything to speak of.

I think that players coming out of college are "thrown to the wolves" The money these kids make coming out is unreal. They have to produce early or they will be considered a bust. The NFL need to change the amount a rookie can make, I know it;s a union thing.

Baseball restricts what a rookie can make and it is a great thing. I think that the NFL should look at that and make something similar.

Danny ------ yeah Colston is having a sub-par year I am so glad i didn't draft him for my fantasy team :) In the college game youngsters play for the passion of the game because they know they have a small chance of even being successful in the NFL. Overpaid, unproven rookies in the NFL lack that passion and it shows when they play.

David ------ But aren't NFL players underpaid compared to the salaries of NBA and MLB players? I find that amazing becuase NFL players careers are shorter than that of the other major sports.

Eddy, it needs to be a revamped system. No MLB player comes out the gate and gets to the Big Show. You have to play in Rookie league and the work their way up.
