It’s President’s Day...Let Me Tell You How I Had the Honor of Meeting President George HW Bush Before He Became “Bush 41”.

First.. this is not a political post.  I don’t do those.   However inasmuch as this Presidential Sealis President’s Day I wanted to tell you my story of when I met then Congressman George HW Bush.

In 1966, George HW Bush was elected to the House of Representatives from my home state of Texas and represented  Houston.. my home town.  The following year I graduated from high school and as was tradition went on a senior trip with my drill team ( yes, in Texas drill teams and football went hand in hand) to Washington DC, Philadelphia, NYC and Boston.

We spent 3 days in DC and I loved every minute of it. But the most memorable time for me was being “treated” to lunch by then Congressman George HW Bush.  We were met by him outside the Capitol and had our group photo taken with him.   He seemed genuine and glad to “show off” our Capitol to some home town girls.

But that wasn’t my only “meeting’ of President Bush.  By the time I’d graduated from college, George Bush was now Ambassador to the United Nations.   My mother wrote to him when the United Nations was taking a vote to seat the People’s Republic of China.   He wrote her back.. and it wasn’t just a 1 paragraph “Thank you for writing... yada yada” letter.   It was several pages long with a detailed explanation of why the US was voting as they did.   (Needless to say I did save the letter.)

George HW Bush has served his country many times over.... he was the youngest aviator (at the time) in the US Navy, postponing his college education.... US Congressman..... Ambassador to the United Nations....Chairman of the Republican National Committee.....Envoy to China....Director of the CIA.....Vice President and then President of the United States.

One of my “bucket list” items is to read about all of our Presidents.   And, beginning with President George H W Bush is a great way to get started.

Senior Trip

(As I mentioned, this is not a political post so if you have an issue or disagreement with President Bush, that is your business... take it up with him or your bartender, but not here!... Thank you)

Kathy, WOW it is great to know that you've met President George HW Bush. I don't like to discuss politics but it is very exiting that you talked to someone who will be in US history forever.

Kathy, That is so cool to have met President Bush! The closest I have come to any President is visiting  Roosevelt's Warm Springs home in Georgia. It has a 'bump' gate in front of the house, I have wanted one of those ever since!

Hi Kathy, those are very good memories!  I don't see nothing wrong with meeting different politicians of all parties whether you agree with them or their policies or not.  Thanks for sharing your story, I think it's a very enjoyable one!

John- Hope you had a great day today.. don't know if you had it off but I'd bet you made it a great day anyway.

Anna- I like to keep politics to myself but it was interesting to watch him throughout his career.

Rebecca- I'd also forgotten when we were driving through the Houston Country Club once and he was there playing golf.  I was surprised the Secret Service let us get that close.

Janis- thank you.  I just didn't want anyone to use this as a forum for their political agenda.  Would have been the first time I deleted a comment.  And I do remember meeting him and how impressed I was at how truly genuine he seemed.

Wanda- You have to admire someone who's served his country for so many years.

Sylvia - I'll have to tell the story of when I met Senator Joe Lieberman.

Sharon- I didn't want to seem mean but just wanted to keep it fun.

BARFF- thanks.. take it you got back safely.

Jennifer- it was a memory I've always kept!!!

Kathy -- very cool story!   Despite everything people say about our President(whoever he has been and whoever he/she may be in the future) --- I believe there is a certain level of respect for the office even when a President didn't receive my vote.

Ellen- It did have an impact on me.

Sharon- no way.  I actually have a shot of then Congressman Bush with part of the top of my head.  My friends were not great photographers.

Lou- thanks!  She was a letter writer for all causes.

Michael- I totally agree with you.  Regardless of who is or has been in the office, I think most of the public respects the Presidency.
