Links work better when they come from sites that are on topic. One trick I use is to leverage off the authority of the larger trusted sites, point the links to a blog on theme and then run the blog links to my main site. You get a flow of PR or "authority" that converts to the theme of your site along the way. It takes time but it's worth it.
