Proposed 2015 Markham Pan Am Centre Unveiled

The Town of Markham and the Pan Am 2015 Games Committee held the first official unveiling of the proposed 2015 Pan Am Games facility in Markam on February 16, 2012.

The facility is proposed to be 142,000 square feet and construction is expected to commence in July 2012 and completed in 2014.  It will be located at 16 Main Street Unionville South, just south of Highway 7 on a 13 acre property.  The estimated cost is $52 million for the Olympic-sized swimming pool which will be used for water polo and $22 million for the badminton facility which will meet international badminton and volleyball requirements.

After the 2015 Pan Am Games, the facility will be operated as a community centre with a focus on acquatics, badminton, volleyball, basketball, table tennis and pickleball.

That is a big expense and there should be big revenue for the area.

Marc, though it is a large expense for the games, hopefully it will leave a lasting legacy for the people in the community.

Hi Tim - A lot of the major sports events (Olympics, PanAm, Commonwealth) tend to cost quite a bit and seem to lose money regularly.

Hi Chris - There are a number of municipalities in the GTA and surrounding areas that are having facilities built and / or utilized for the Pan Am Games.
