When I first got started in real estate down here in sunny Naples, Florida my mission was to break into the luxury market.  I knew it was going to be competitive but truth be told I HAD NO IDEA how competitive in fact it really was.

I did everything I could think of to obtain my first million plus dollar listing.  After all, I wasn't new to the real estate game I was just new to Naples.  I did open houses for other agents, cold called, sent post cards, got involved in the community.  I had a lot of close calls but to land that first listing was brutal.

After doing a completely insane marketing campaign (10 different marketing pieces every three days) to for sale by owners and expired listings I finally got my first real call back.  It was from an Attorney out of Chicago who had his 1.8 million dollar home on the market for over 3 1/2 years and had since recently expired again.  He asked a few questions and agreed to allow me to preview the property while his cleaning lady was at the home.

I was SO NERVOUS when I went to the house.  I remember thinking to myself, geeez Shannon pull it together, you're not even meeting with the homeowner!  When I got to the front door I was greeted by Barbara who had known my prospect personally for several years.  She showed me through the whole house and talked about how great my prospect was and his wife before she had passed away.  See, this was "her" home in Florida.  She had always wanted a home in Florida and after many years they finally purchased a lot, built this magnificent house and not too long after she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away.  He didn't even like to come down anymore because the memories of her were too painful for him to bare.

As I was walking through the home I noticed everything was in near new condition (much because it had hardly been lived in).  The master bedroom and bath was the last part of the house we looked at and as I was walking through the master bath I noticed this tiny plastic giraffe on a little ledge next to the shower.  It was a weird place for a nick nack and the nick nack didn't really belong but it was at that minute I knew I was getting the listing.

Giraffes in my family have a special meaning.  My sister gave birth to the first little boy (after both sisters had 9 little girls together) this making 9 nieces and 1 nephew.  Unfortunately, little John was born with an irreversible birth defect and he died 10 short days later.  It was the worst family tragedy we ever experienced.

A few days before John's funeral, I was with my sister helping her shop for something to wear (she was probably trying to keep her mind off her pain).  She spotted a little silver necklace with a tiny little giraffe on it.  She held it up for me to get a closer look and asked, "Do you think John would've liked giraffes"?  I said, "Oh he would've loved giraffes". So there's the connection.

I did get that listing...and 8 months later I sold it.  I got both sides.  :)

Barbara called me while she was packing up all of my client's things to have shipped back to Chicago and said, "I was asked to give you a call to see if there's anything in the house that you wanted".

I thought about it for a little bit and said, you know, there's a little giraffe in the master bathroom.  I'd love to have that if he doesn't mind parting with it.  She sounded as if she didn't know what I was talking about and said she'd get back to me.

A few weeks after closing I walked into my office one day to see Barbara sitting in the lobby.  She apologized for taking so long to get "him" to me and in her hands was "John" the giraffe.  It was one of the best closing gift I ever received.

He sits between my computer screens at work everyday and reminds me whatever's going on...it's going to be ok.  Isn't it cool how sometimes we just know?

Really great story.  I like John.  He has a good face.  He looks like the perfect office mate.  Did your client ever tell you why John was sitting by the shower?

So sorry about your little nephew.  That's heartbreaking.

That was such a touching story Shannon!  I'll always remember your connection whenever I see a giraffe now.

Elaine, There wasn't any real reason John was sitting on the shower ledge.  In fact after thanking my client and talking to Barbara about it they seemed a little puzzled as to why that was what I wanted.  As far as John is concerned it was a real heart breaker.  Almost cried while writing the post. Thanks for your comments Elaine! :)

SALLY:  THANKS.  I think my sister would love to know that!  I think she worries that we will forget about him one day.  Not gonna happen.  Thanks for your support! :)

Shannon - you almost cried - I did cry. Kids and dying - too hard. This is a wonderful story. There are things that somehow work in mysterious ways. No, not superstitious - we just believe in giraffes:)

Shannon, I can't tell you how much I loved this story of yours....words do not suffice. Yes, it's VERY cool how sometimes we just 'know'.
The universe has a way of getting messages to us....even if it is sometimes through plastic giraffes.

I'm sorry to hear about your little nephew. I had a little sister who died at 6 months due to a birth defect. It was the hardest thing my parents have ever gone through. In my family, my parents have 9 grandsons (myself and each of my brothers each has 3 boys). One of my brothers adopted a little girl from China so now my parents have their grand-daughter.

What a compelling story, Shannon.  Knowing full well the gaping hole that the loss of a child would cause in my life, one that could never be filled, this really touched me.  I am more proud of you for securing that giraffe than selling the house.  Great post, Shannon.  I'm going to hug my boys extra tight tonight.

Wow, Shannon. You are an amazing woman. So many other people would have chosen something that was worth money, yet you chose something that was worth more than any amount of money. It shows your true character. To me, that's priceless.

Shannon~ loved your story.  There's probably not a family who has not been touched by tragedy, the loss of my younger sister is one that my family has to bear.  I did smile at how you saw the giraffe as a sign because I see signs all the time.   My husband will roll his eyes and call it a coincidence but I know what they really are!!

Wow a beautiful story.   It wonderful when we can look at things like the giraffe and are immediately brought back to the point you wrote about.   And better yet... how much that simple item means and represents to YOU.

Thanks for sharing!!

Shannon - This one brought me to tears.  I featured it in Family Ties.  What a touching story.  I am with Paul on this one - I am going to hug on my kids right now.

Shannon - What a beautiful story! Wow-- All I can think about is the photograph I posted in your previous post about your zebra post. I posted my son hugging that giraffe statue when he was a little boy! I hope that I didn't touch a nerve there! I will never look at that photo the same, it will be in honor of your sweet nephew John who was taken that day! He is in a much kinder, gentler place now! Sending comfort across the miles. Thank you for sharing your beautiful story!

Shannon, what a very touching story.  I love hearing people's stories about the sentimental things in their lives which have so much meaning.  It's wonderful going into people's homes and seeing their excitement when they tell you about the significance of what otherwise look like trinkets.  Thanks for sharing this story.

BRIAN:  Isn't that funny how when you first walk into a house and then you get to learn the background?  It as if the home takes on a whole new life.  In this particular house, the wife who passed had a special affinity for little tiny chairs and had maybe 10 or so through out the home.  Barbara had told me about it and I remember showing that home a trillion times and always walking by a couple of little tiny beach chairs and winking at them as if maybe she could see and hoping for her approval on my showing capabilities.

Wow, Shannon!  What a touching and terrific story.  Yes, it is nice that we are reassured sometimes.  I lost my Dad to cancer a few years ago.  I know how that seller felt.  My Mom often feels the same way.  Dad was only 54 years old.  Thank you for helping him (the seller) to unload that burden.

What a wonderfully touching story. I can't imagine the loss of a child, no matter what age.  But, he lives on in memories like this one.  (By the way, I hope you will write some time about starting over in my Newbies Again group.  It is so hard and we need to hear your struggles and successes like this one.)

Shannon, Great Post. There is nothing better then when those kind of things happen and you just know. We are connected to the earth and to eachother in amazing ways. Thank you for being so open and vulnerable in sharing your story.

12/02/2007 03:49 PM by Sally Zatkoff (Weichert)

Shannon- I read several things here, but the one I am going to comment on is how you kept trying to break into the Luxury Field, and the nervousness when you felt over that possible listing.  It's great the way it just fell into place, and how a simple little thing that you could identify with gave you confidence.

Just as in all new things we have to try to find something that we have in common....and for you it was the giraffe.  Apparent the client didn't even remember it, but obviously it was there for a reason.  I loved this part...the destiny of it....and congratulations on double ending it :) :)  After 31/2 years on the market that is a huge testament to you and your abilities.  Good job.......
