The Internet...A Blessing or a Curse ?

  ????? The internet….A Blessing or A Curse…????

tv               I remember  my Mother telling about a man coming to their house and talking to my Grandfather about a box that people would plug in and have in their living room and people would  give you news and weather reports and provide  all kinds of entertainment and educational programs. You could turn the box on and off ….it would be like people were in your living room for a visit…only they couldn’t see you, you could just see them.

man on the moon       My Grandfather laughed…”Oh sure, the same time they put  a  man on the moon.”

And…that was pre-television…..and the rest of course, is history.

Today…in some ways, the internet serves as that more technically oriented piece of home entertainment and  education.  Available in any room of the house…office…on   your phone, in your care…the information highway that my Grandfather could never have imagined.

encyclopedia       We all love that we can put our listings on “the net” share our lives on  Facebook if we choose….appreciate the information of all kinds on a myriad of topics…up to the minute information…gone are the days of the red bound set of encyclopedias….it is truly the age of information….and with that  age come some cautions.

There is the issue of credability…there are no rules or laws   that prohibit anyone from expressing an opinion….and know that may be what it is and not well researched  fact or truth.

Buyer Beware should be more the mantra for today’s

consumer. More information is not always true information….

the highest and best source of information or more than

one opinion from credible sources is best guideline for

   consumers.

Sally and David- this reminds me of those never-ending emails we get about people or things that when you go to Snopes.com or somewhere else proves them to be not true.  I love the Internet, but we still need to be cautious and use good judgment.

It see it as more a blessing than a curse. The majority of my business comes from buyers moving to my area. They never would have found me had it not been for the internet.

I cannot imagine life without the internet. You are right, however, that the increased info available also means increased mis-information. Check and re-check info and sources. And be careful what you put out there.

The thing about going online is you can find any number of sources to disagree with each other. Some do it on purpose. Even I do it on purpose because people search for opposite things. If I write an article about why you should buy a home, I'll also do why you should not buy a home. I can make a case to support anybody's conviction. People need to apply critical thinking, but nobody even knows what that is anymore because we've removed all incentives to think, process and analyze.

Thanks for the post today, I enjoyed the read.

It can be both, good and bad, if you will.  Like anything I guess,

Hi Sally & David,  As to your question: depends which day it is and how my day is going.  We are so dependant on all this technology that whenever a small part of it isn't working we are out of business.

Of course its a blessing if you are smart enough to reason and research, for those that read and agree it probably is a curse.

To me, the Internet is a tool not a substitute for a human being. I use it accordingly. Its people that are the value. Many things compete with that but fail. One on one human contact has no substitute...All meaningful roads lead to a human being not a machine...good post and hosts

There's lots of good and lots of bad that comes with the advent of any new technology.

Adaptation and moderation are two critical components, that must be properly exercised with it.

It's the lack of credibility that hurts some folks "on the net".  When you go to sites with invalid listing information, it undermines consumer confidence.  However, as with all things that people find useful, the Internet is here to stay and will evolve over time just as TV did.

The internet, though it may be both a blessing and a curse is fast becoming a necessity and we need to be wise enough to learn how to use it properly and do our due diligence in determining that which is true and that which isn't.

And my Great Grandmother didn't want to listen to the radio because "you never know what you might catch from them furrin places". The internet is definately a blessing. One just has to be smart, and not believe everything because someone said so.

One click of the mouse sure beats sifting through page after page for information. But we do have to be careful and check our facts.

Congrats on the feature.

First of all congrats on the feature.  Second it's a two faced coin in that it has cost several people their jobs and a blessing because it gives us almost all the data and more we need at the touch of a keyboard

Sally and David - I'm sometimes amazed at the amount of information and how connected we are.  My grandparents were baffled by voicemail and my sons can't imagine phones that are connected to the wall unless they're charging.

The world has changed!

Yes Sally, I so appreciate it when someonw says well it says you are the best short sale agent in.... so how does that buyer honestly  know that, they have believed what they read & they are lucky I am honest but it is a double edged sword...too many are there to deceive and grab the money...great share.
