So, you’re ready to start your very own real estate blog. No one starts a real estate blog thinking “Yeah, I want this blog to be a complete flop.” But you have to face the fact that more than 50% of all blogs created will be dead within a year due to lack of traffic, lack of interest and lack of focus. There are 10 common missteps of rookie real estate bloggers.   Knowing what they are and how to avoid them will ensure that your new real estate blog survives and thrives on the wild wild web.

No contact form.

I can’t even tell you how many blogs forget to place a “contact” button, form or email address on their site. It’s very frustrating for a reader. So, the number one thing you should look for on your blog is a clearly visible “contact” button or link. The two best places for contact buttons are in a top menu bar or in the footer.

Read also: 10 features of successful blogs

No site search

Another super annoying trait of rookie bloggers is that they often forget to include a site search tool. People use the internet because it makes finding specific things easy and fast. Give your readers the ability to search through all your past articles to find the specific topics they are looking for. Otherwise, you limit them to only reading your most recent posts or having to weed through your entire body of work to find the one thing they are looking for.

Never answers the WIFM (What’s in it for me) question

Good blog posts not only provide quality information but they clearly spell out what the benefits of reading the post are. Many newbie bloggers forget to remind readers why they would want to read their posts in the first place.  Explicit benefits far out weigh implied ones. So, remind the reader throughout your post how what the article will help them achieve the promise you made in the post’s title. The word “because” is always valuable when expressing benefits.

Don’t stick to KISS copywriting

Keep It Simple Stupid is probably the most important copywriting rule you should know. After you write a post and before you press “save” you should ask yourself if the post is so easy to understand that if someone knew nothing about the topic they would still “get” the article. If the answer is “no” go back to the drawing board.

Writing is too dry

There is nothing worse than a dry blog. You have to inject personality and wit into each and every post. Use your authentic voice. What that means is- you want to type the way you talk. People want to feel connected to you personally when they read your blog, not as though a corporation is speaking to them.

Read also: Humanizing a blog for intimacy

Heavy on advertising and light on education

Too often, new bloggers just cut and paste all their sales materials from their website onto their blog. Or they go ahead and pen posts about how great a Realtor they are and how happy their clients are. And while there is nothing wrong with telling people how great you are, you need to do it the right way - through storytelling, not by directly stating it. Tell the story of how you turned a buyer’s frown upside down. Tell stories about how you single handedly saved a homeowners house from foreclosure or salvaged a messy closing. That type of self promotion is what people want to hear! Show them that you know their problem and you know how to solve it. Also, make sure to post at least one step by step educational post once a week. You want to build your reputation as an expert by providing quality tutorials to home buyers and sellers.

No means of collecting leads

Now, this one is just sad. You spend all that time blogging and forget to make sure your blog has a simple lead generation tool. Allow people to subscribe to your RSS feed by email or a opt-in for a newsletter. In our case, we allow for higher level lead generation like personal search subscriptions or CMA tools.

Blogging in a bubble

Blogging is about community. If you just blog and never reach out to other bloggers or blog readers, you are blogging in your own little bubble. To build community for your blog you have to go out and make a few friends. Two of the best ways to do that are to join a free blog network like MyBlogLog and start commenting on other industry and local blogs. Where do you find other blogs? The easiest way to find local and industry blogs is to just do a search for your farm area or specific industry terms on Google Blog Search

Read also: The rules for commenting for traffic

No link love

Now, I’m not talking blog rolls- I hate them for a whole variety of reasons. What I mean by link love is that each post you write should link out to other blog articles or websites to offer the reader more resources or references for your data. You should also provide internal links to other articles within your own blog to keep visitors moving through related stories on your own site. You have a 68% greater chance of acquiring a reader as an RSS subscriber if they read more than one post on your blog in a single visit- so link internally liberally!

Read also: Using links to retain visitors and generate leads

Lack of keyword density in posts

A blog helps you climb the search engine ranks (SERPs) because it provides search engine with fresh content to crawl frequently. However, if you do not pepper your posts with the keywords and phrases you want to be searched by, you simply aren’t providing the kind of content that will help you climb the SERPs for those specific terms. The trick to climbing the SERPs for very specific terms is to strategically place those terms thought your text.

Hi Mary,

This is the first of your 'blogging' series that I have read...I am so behind everyone, but better late than never!

One of my 'business' resolutions for 2007 is to read your entire series and 'get with the program'...I'm sure that I have probably made more than my share of blog 'faux pas'!  Before joining AR, I had never blogged before and it took me a while to get up my nerve and start blogging here.

I am thankful for the time and effort that you take to educate us all!  So, thank you!

You comment about SERP and Keyword Density is very misguided.  Fresh content is good for your readers obviously, and yes it does make the robots chew your page more frequently. However this has nothing to do with obtaining a higher position.  Keyword Density is a factor to consider but it is a very small one! Search engine algorithims give at least 90% consideration to OFF-SITE factors.  Absolute CONCRETE proof of this can be found by doing a search on Google for "miserable failure".  Nowhere on the #1 ranking site for that term contains the words "miserable failure".You can also be penalized for "overdoing" it. This is called "keyword stuffing".

Not having any readers of your blog is not necessarily a bad thing.  Search Engines have no way of knowing whether there are readers or not. It is very easy to simulate your own comments and replies so that it can be used as an off-site strategy for your main website.  Of course it is BETTER to have readers, but it's not the end of the world if you don't.

 Otherwise, quite a nice post!

 Cheers!

My response via email to the blogger above (David):

FYI: I am an SEO in the the greater technical community with fortune 500 clients in my portfolio.  That is my primary job.  Nothing I said was misguided in terms of SEO and search.

On site factors such as keyword density and and the relevance of keywords to site content are important factors and no less important than offsite factors such as backlinks.  As you can see from Widexl's own results, those factors do in fact play a heavy role.  MSN, Yahoo and Ask place special importance on those while Google is only concerned with them in terms of their relevancy to the actual content on the page.

Your "concrete proof "is not valid.  It has been proven and discussed by Matt Cutts of Google that your example is a result of Google's semantic system and has nothing to do with normal search.

Google's Algorithms for SERP and PR are well summarized on SEOmoz and I recommend you read them as you clearly do not understand how search works.

As for traffic on your blog- it is very important- otherwise why are you wasting your time?

6:00pm • #35

Well I'm glad you have fortune 500 results in your portfolio...  I'm sure your clients love seeing that instead of actual results, which is the only thing mine cared about seeing.  What is this greater technical community?  Are you trying to say you are more technically inclined than I?  I'm not a Realtor giving his opinion on things.  I actually have a degree in Computer Engineering and have done SEO consult work with companies like LendingTree.

Yes, what you said was misguided.

You need to carefully read what I wrote.  I didn't say that onsite was not important.  I understand you can get penalized for improper onsite factors.  However when it comes to things that SE's view as positive, Offsite outweighs onsite every time.  If what you say is true, then there would be no such thing as web spam.

My proof is valid, and you have no idea what you are talking about. Do you even understand what LSI is?  I have been reading Matt's blog longer than you, and no correlation of LSI and the miserable failure Google bomb has been made.   Google addresses the miserable failure thing here: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/09/googlebombing-failure.html  Not only does it make no mention of semantic indexing, but clearly states my point: In this case, a number of webmasters use the phrase [miserable failure] to describe and link to President Bush's website, thus pushing it to the top of searches for that phrase.   Did you catch that Mary?  They used the PHRASE to describe and LINK to WEBSITE, thus PUSHING it to the TOP OF SEARCHES for that PHRASE?!

Your last comment is HILARIOUS!   Just because YOU think they are "well summarized" on some private consulting company's website, DOESN'T MAKE IT SO!  If you are using that as a basis for "understanding", you clearly don't understand what research is.

It's not wasting time. If you were up to date on SEO you would know that links from blogs and forums are now given more weight than some random text link on the footer of some random website.

Thanks for this though, I needed a good laugh.

Mary,

I think your position on leads is misguided, but I'll leave it at that.

I think the biggest mistake that beginning bloggers make is failing to identify their target audience and staying focused on it.

"Buyers, sellers and investors in the [your city here] metro area" is not a focus. "Real estate" is not a focus.

A focus has to be highly specific and preferably highly local, and it needs to be maintained.

All of the rest of the excellent advice you're providing on this blog becomes meaningless, I think, in the absence of a focus that's meaningful to someone.

How many magazines would you subscribe to if you had no idea what the magazine was going to contain from issue to issue? Zero is the answer for most people.

You've given a clear view of some of the trees, but failed to mention the forest.

Excellent post, with lots of good points!  I really enjoyed it.

Now please don't take this the wrong way, but can somebody please tell me why this has six-thousand-something views?!?  Like I said, it is a great post, but that is nowhere in line with the other posts, that I can see.  Is this being published elsewhere?  I was just looking through page views and this one has about 15 times more than what looks to be average.  Again, I am not saying this to be even the slightest bit rude, I am just curious about the super-high number.

Just wondering if someone could shed some light.  Again, great post Mary.

Look at that! When an individual speaks and has something to say that is so remarkable and contributes so much to so many others and your blog is still being read with the same reactions today as when you first wrote it. You must feel very proud that so many have recognised you for the outstanding offering you made. I suspect that many of us will be using this as a guide for a long time to come. You are certainly talented, well spoken and have made a major contribution to rest of us who seek excellence in what we do. Thank you and know that you are just the type of REALTOR that I have such a profound respect for and any business I can direct to you, I certainly would. And I will do it with the satisfaction of knowing that someone I am referring will likely think even more of me for picking the best of the best to refer them to. You are a real treasure and I am fortunate to have found your contribution to organized real estate.

Sincerely,

William

I'm new to AR, but I just found this post.  Excellent.  I actually consider myself a blogging/SEO genius - but I can tell you I'm making most of the mistake you listed above.  Time to get back to basics.  Thanks!

Mary,

I really want to ad a blog to my website. The guy who made my web site is a nice guy but I think he is a little behind in technology. How do I ad a blogg to my website and make it the most up to date?

OMG!  I am new to blogging and all this information is overwhelming.  How does anyone do this and manage to still have time to actually conduct business.  There is a lot of good information here, but I have to be honest it makes me just want to give up...throw in the towel.  Any advice is appreciated.

Just stick to writing good local content and have fun, Carmen.  Then keep an eye on what others are adding to their blogs and incorporate things that work for you.

Carmen, I think we all have thought the same.  Not to worry.  You do a little, stop and do business that makes money.  Money is the driver.  I have had to make myself a schedule for early morning opening up to ActiveR and then going on about my daily business or late at night works for me too.

But in all honestly there is allot here to learn and it has saved me hours of research just by reading AR!

lol it will be OK.

Mary (or anyone interested in commenting)- Can you boil it down for a simple guy...how many hours a day does a fairly new real estate blogger need to spend to get to a place of comfort with this format? Assuming slightly above average education, abilities, and fair amount of prayer =)???
