Selling an Empty House?

Selling an Empty House? We all know that furnished homes (especially staged homes) sell faster than empty homes. But finding furniture can be an expensive and cumbersome project.

Well, in this morning's newspaper, there was an article about a young entrepreneur in New Haven CT who makes cardboard furniture! The company is Chairigami, which was the brainchild of Zach Rotholz, who has a mechanical engineering degree from Yale University. He has yet to get his business off the ground, but I think he could hit the jackpot in selling cardboard furniture to anyone involved in a real estate transaction.

The furniture is easy to assemble, it's very sturdy (you can actually sit on it or use it), and very reasonable priced. For stagers and REALTORS®, it folds flat so it's easy to store and it can be used over and over again. Granted, the furniture isn't exactly decorative, but it would give someone an idea about furniture placement, space, etc.  And who knows, with a cover, the furniture might actually look like the real deal.

It may not be everyone's taste, but it's a fascinating new idea.

Here is the website:  Chairigami

Peggy, that sounds like a more reasonable alternative to staging!   I have an empty house that my retired seller cannot afford to stage!

Unfortunately, corrugated boxes, even double-walled boxes as this furniture appears to use, has limited shelf life... especially if it is being broken down and re-set up.  The boxes themselves loose their integrity and no longer hold their shape, become very dirty (just from normal oils on the body) and start to look very worn.

Having said that, I do think there might be an application for their usefulness.  It will be interesting to see how this company fairs... Great blog and thanks for bringing the information to our attention!

Hi Dangy - That's exactly what I thought!

Hi Joan - It seems like a very reasonable alternative and much easier to store than extra furniture no one needs.

Hi Peggy - I too hope his business is a success - I am just fascinated by how people think things up!

Hi George - I hope he gets some extra google juice from this too!

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to check this out - I can think of a number of uses for this type of furniture.

Peggy -- What an interesting concept.  I had heard of this....love the name of the company. I have two listings coming up with none or limited furniture. I am going to look into this further. Thanks!

Um, I always thought vacant home sold faster due to the fact that folks could place their own furniture in there in their own mind of course plus it makes the home look bigger. As side note I have ask Goodwill on several occassions to bring some good peices to a home. Not only sold the home sold the furniture many times.

Peggy, that's a clever kid, but then what else would you expect from a Yalie, and an engineer? Peggy, #3 is right about the long term life of the boxes, but that's what duct tape is for, and it comes in colors
