As I mentioned in a post yesterday we have a new tool in the system now.  You can now flag posts to be featured or edited.

The purpose of this new tool is to help keep the community running smoothly.  It is not to identify "bad" people, but in a large network of people certain rules are difficult to monitor from one central source.  By putting together this tool we feel that we will be giving the community better access to resources.

ActiveRain Flag Post imageThere is a new button next to all posts a flag that reads "Flag Post." Using this button you can call out the post for a number of different things.

Featured

If you are reading through the blogs and see something you'd like to get marked as a featured post on the main page of The ActiveRain Real Estate Network hit the flag button and you'll be taken to a new screen that will give you the option of selecting a flag to vote for the post.  If you're just flagging it to be featured it's not necessary to leave a comment just check the box that says "Featured" next to it and hit submit.

Plagiarized

If you should be reading and see a post in which it appears someone is using someone else's work without properly crediting them for it, then please go in to the flagging screen and check the "plagiarism" flag.  If you know another place were the copyrighted material originated from please enter the url of that original material in the box provided.

Inappropriate

We have yet to see much this type of stuff on ActiveRain.  But if you should see something that is clearly inappropriate for this forum then this is the box you would check.  As with all of these flags please be careful of what you check here, if it's something you just don't like, or don't agree with move on, this flag should be reserved for blatantly inappropriate content.

Miscategorized

Often times posts are showing up in the wrong places.  We've included this flag in order to help educate members and keep the network running smoothly as we grow.  IF you should see a post that is in the wrong place then flag it as miscategorized.

This is for posts that are advertisements and should be listed as such.  We have a check box, when posting, to indicate that a post is an advertisement.  It seems as though a number of times this box is missed when a person posts. This is another type of miscategorization but I felt it should get different treatment. If you should see a post that is an advertisement and isn't listed as such please submit the flag as an advertisement.

What is done with these?

Once notifications reach a certain threshold, specific actions will be taken depending upon the flags put on a post.  For example if a post gets enough featured nominations then it may be featured.  If a post gets enough miscategorized nominations then the poster may be notified and sent a link to read up on categorizing posts.

If ultimately an individual is found to be abusing The Network and hurting this community then they may be asked to leave.

The integrity of this tool depends upon your careful and deliberate use of it's features.  Do not use this tool unless you mean it.  These designations may be amended as we go forward with this.  The purpose of adding this tool was to give the community more of an outlet.

Thank you.

Caleb

Update:

Spam

Some posts are just spam.  There various types of posts that would fit into this category.  Many of them are targeted to drive search engine traffic with lots of key-words or links. This isn't helpful and is in many ways harmful.

Please revisit this page for updates on the category definitions.

Very nice. The features are coming thick and fast. I hope this doesn't get abused. It will be a great way to bring attention to the good articles though.

Caleb, I think this tool is a good addition, I just hope that people respect its intent and not for some type of personal gratification.  For example I have been told that some will go into someone’s Post and give it a (1) just to bring them down, even if it is a good Post.  Also I have been told that some will go into a Post and give it a (5) just to boost up that person, even if the Post does not merit that score.

So even though this could open it self to similar abuse, it is well worth the risk, and I for one think that it is needed.  Thank You.

Nice work fellows! Hopefully it will be used, and not abused. But I assume you capture the info on the submitter as well, so that should cut out any abuse potential.

THank you so much AR!  It will be great to not have to wade through copy and pasted articles and ads when we choose "no ads!"

We realize the potential for abuse so were building in a lot of checks and balances and moving slowly to automate the actions taken.  For example it will also analyze trends in people flagging posts as well as the flags themselves.  So you shouldn't need to worry about people flagging your posts simply because they don't like your viewpoint.

Actions may include removing/adding points to posts, removing the post from a catagories, notifying the poster with a warning, notifying us to investigate, etc.

Great addition-

I'm particularly looking forward to using it to bring attention to great posts that are sometimes missed due to huge volume.

Should work out very well - Thanks Guys!

Caleb, kudos for this enhanced feature.  I am amazed at all of the enhancements of this site...which I thought was already pretty terrific from the start.

Since the flagging of a blog is targeted at the original poster, can this feature be used to report spam in the form of a comment?  Perhaps by explaining it in the information box?

Thanks Caleb!

I'm glad I read this.  I would have assumed that flagging a post would just be for someone who is plagerizing.  I think it's great that we can flag a post that we also feel should be featured.

Caleb and Matt,

I appreciate the fact that you guys are empowering us, the members, with more and more ability to police ourselves, rather than all the weight being place upon you guys. You have more important issues to deal with than to babysit 10K+ AR members!

Thanks... I have wondered why some don't get featured and others do... now I can help bring attention to those that aren't to help get them noticed by others.  Thanks.

Okay. I am back to the right post now. :) I forgot what I was going to say. Sorry folks. We have 4 Grand Kids running around. :) Anyway, I really hope that the check and balance automated will nip abuse right in the abuse bud. All I was expecting was a plager flag. These other features send up more flags with me. I know some people who will take advantage of the flag system ASAP. So, how soon will the auto bots kick in on the flags? TLW...ROAR!

I'm actually suprised at how few posts ended up getting flagged today.  Same thing with the ratings, I'm suprised at how few people use them considering these are the two things that give people the most control over the community and will have noticable effects.

Based off the initial flags we removed points from a couple posts, removed a few that were incorrectly catagorized and are dealing with a plagerism/copyright violator right now.  As we get a better idea of how people use the flags we'll begin to fully automate the process (with checks and balances) next week.

Hey Caleb

This is a good tool, just how will it work when everyone starts to flag certain blogs to be featured on the page. Will there be some sort of guidelines for that??

It appears that there will be a fine line between 'spam' and flagging for 'advertising'....what happens when they do both?  Can you flag for more than one reason?

Caleb,

This is great. More options for the end user. It's a good thing! does the owner of the blog get notification of the flag?

Ade HouseYou are right, Caleb, I have to remind myself to rate the good blogs (if I have nothing good to say, I'll say nothing at all). Let's see how the new empowerment tools work.

Agree with another commenter-- I really hope this doesn't get abused!  I hope that it isn't like flagging on Craigslist, where you never know why you were flagged, and as a newbie, you don't get enough feedback to improve.

Aloha Caleb, Currently we have a delete option and a spam option when someone posts something inappropriate on our blog posts. Is there a possibility in the future of a third option to flag those who are rude, insulting or vulgar, besides just deleting them.  I am suggesting that you may consider a block sender or censor button.  It not permanently at least for that blog post.

Randy...i think i saw you mention that in a post?  Yeah I like the idea.  There's no reason not to have this.  However someone could always sign out to post, what do you think about that?

Caleb - That was brought up during the discussion.  I am not sure if there is a way to stop that, unless you block the public comments, which defeats why most of us are here.

Possibly someone wiser than I am could think of a better mouse trap.

Please tell me, as I am unclear about this. I've noticed on the blogs of several realtors, posting duplications of the identical post, with minor changes to the title.

These people are racking up points like crazy. What's to stop anyone from doing this? It doesn't seem right. What do you say?

I looked this up because I keep seeing posts with a yellow oval with a red line through it. I guess I'll flag a post and see if that symbol shows up. I know it doesn't look good, but is it for plaigirism? inappropriate? or either? Thanks.
