Recently, I commented on a blog about a Paul Bunyon and his blue ox, Babe.  I thought our very own Trees of Mystery in Klamath, Del Norte, CA, hosted the birthplace of the pair- seeing how large they are and the fables that are told.

THE Paul Bunyon

Wow, so many Bunyons!  Paul Bunyon's birthplace appears to be in Bangor, ME, somewhere around 1834, http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/MEBANbunyan.html.  Also check out http://www.roadsideamerica.com/muffler/track.html  to see all the Paul Bunyons and other statues that roadsideamerica.com has to offer.  I never knew there were so many!  Hardly any of them have a blue ox.  Thanks to Elizabeth Weintraub, Sacramento Real Estate Broker.  This was fun.  Thanks again Fran Gatti - Crescent City, CA, for your post that prompted this post.

I have not thought about Paul and Babe for many moons. I do remember seeing a statue of them in upper Minnesota when I was a child. For some reason, I thought that he was originated in the west as part of the logging out there. Who wudda thunk Bangor, Maine!

Thanks for the post and the history lesson.

I'd send you the photo of Paul in Bemidji, but my husband would have a hissy fit. He's doing something goofy in the photo. He's always doing something silly. He went through the roof when I posted a photograph of him online with a giant tomato on his head and green beans sticking out of his mouth, walrus-like. Sometimes I think the guy has no sense of humor. Good post, though.

Michael,  I'm glad I could spark some memories.

Elizabeth,  I don't think I would be game for many costume poses either!  Thank you very much for the links.  I couldn't have done this post without your insight.  I love this pair here in Del Norte, CA- even if they're not the originals.  Sorry for not typing back sooner.

Oooohhhhhh!  The memories!  I remember seeing Paul Bunyon and Babe when I was a little girl.  My parents traveled different parts of the US every year for vacation.  I remember how HUGE they were.

Thanks for the memories!

How far is Crescent City from Yellowstone National Park?  When I visited there about 10 years ago, there was something out there that looked a little similar to this, Dinosaur National Park, if I remember the correct name.  In UT I think.

Hello Ronald- Paul Bunyon is over 70 feet tall here in Del Norte, CA!  Babe is over 50 feet tall.  We are over 1,000 miles away from Yellowstone.  Del Norte County borders the Oregon Border on the California Coast.  We are the gateway to the Sequoia Redwoods, where some trees are over 370 feet tall and over 30 feet in diameter.  Check out some of the links that I have from the blog for more Paul Bunyon statues in the US.  You can probably find the one in Utah.  Thanks for taking the time to comment.
