Lucasville School
10516 Godwin Drive
Manassas 20110
The 1885 Lucasville school was closed in 1926, moved to a farm and used as a storage shed. This is how it appeared in 2007 before restoration was attempted and it was moved to its' present Godwin Road location. Less than 5% of the material could be reused - neglect and termite damage was too severe. Photo courtesy of the Prince William County Historic Preservation Division.
- The Virginia General Assembly approved a statewide system of free public education for all citizens in 1870
- In 1883 the African American members of the Lucasville community petitioned the Manassas School Board to have an elementary school built
- Measuring 18 X 20 feet the one room schoolhouse was completed in 1885 as one of 12 "colored" schools in Prince William County
- The interior panorama shows that the school is decorated as it would have been in the 1910-1912 period
