Commentary on the Washington State Pest Control Association's "Findings and Recommendations"--Firewood Stacked Too Close to the Home

By

IS67         Finding:     Stacked firewood is up against exterior wall. (see diagram)

Recommendation:     Move firewood and/or lumber piles so they are at least four feet away from structure exterior.

----

This has a tendency to be very controversial for many reasons.

First, almost everybody who has firewood stacks it on their home and, thus, it can be a problem when it is mentioned on a home inspection as almost nobody stacks it 4 feet from the home.

Second, many appraisers recommend a pest and dry rot inspection if they see this and, subsequently, we get contacted by lenders whose underwriter is requiring an inspection before they process a loan.

The reason this is a "conducive condition" is because fire wood can and often does harbor wood destroying insects, such as termites or carpenter ants.  When the firewood is stacked up on the home, you can't see the space between the firewood and the home, and it allows for easy access from the wood to the home, which can  result in wood destroying insect infestation.
